Forests contribute to climate change mitigation by storing carbon in tree biomass. The amount of carbon stored in this carbon pool is estimated by using either allometric equations or biomass expansion factors. Both of the methods provide estimate of the carbon stock based on the biometric parameters of a model tree. This study calls attention to the potential advantages of the data mining technique known as instance-based classification, which is not used currently for this purpose. The analysis of the data on the carbon storage in 30 trees of Brazilian pine (Araucaria angustifolia) shows that the instance-based classification provides as relevant estimates as the conventional methods do. The coefficient of correlation between the estimated and measured values of carbon storage in tree biomass does not vary significantly with the choice of the method. The use of some other measures of method performance leads to the same result. In contrast to the convention methods the instance-based classification does not presume any specific form of the function relating carbon storage to the biometric parameters of the tree. Since the best form of such function is difficult to find, the instance-based classification could outperform the conventional methods in some cases, or simply get rid of the questions about the choice of the allometric equations.

BackgroundThe purpose of this study is to evaluate the relationship between glycemic control and the factors of knowledge about diabetes, resilience, depression and anxiety among Brazilian adolescents and young adults with type 1 diabetes.MethodsThis cross-sectional study included 85 adolescents and young adults with type 1 diabetes, aged between 11–22 years, with an average age of 17.7 ± 3.72 years. Glycemic control degree was evaluated through HbA1c. To assess psychosocial factors, the following questionnaires were used: resilience (Resilience Scale, RS) and anxiety and depression (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, HADS). The Diabetes Knowledge Assessment Scale (DKNA) was used to assess knowledge about diabetes.ResultsSignificant correlations were found between HbA1c and resilience, anxiety and depression. Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that the only variable which presented significant association with the value of HbA1c was depression.ConclusionsDepression has a significant association with higher HbA1c levels, as demonstrated in a regression analysis. The results suggest that depression, anxiety and resilience should be considered in the design of a multidisciplinary approach to type 1 diabetes, as these factors were significantly correlated with glycemic control. Glycemic control was not correlated with knowledge of diabetes, suggesting that theoretical or practical understanding of this disease is not by itself significantly associated with appropriate glycemic control (HbA1c ≤ 7.5%).

Resumo Este artigo analisa a criação do Instituto Behring de Terapêutica Experimental, no Rio de Janeiro em 1932, como primeira filial da firma alemã Behringwerke na América Latina, e seu confisco pelo governo brasileiro em 1943. Mediante uma perspectiva transnacional, interpretamos esta iniciativa não apenas como alemã, apesar de sua forte ligação com a diplomacia cultural alemã do período. O plano de expansão comercial para a América Latina começou e foi feito a partir do Rio de Janeiro, e provou-se providencial para preservar o mercado consumidor durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial, quando a Alemanha foi impedida de comercializar com o continente. O papel do Brasil em dar um tom ao mercado biofarmacêutico da região contrasta com a maioria dos trabalhos sobre suas relações com países da América Latina. Por fim, pretendemos também destacar como os interesses científicos e de negócios poderiam se fundir, mas serem apresentados apenas como uma iniciativa para o melhoramento do conhecimento científico.
