Show more

“…In Rio de Janeiro, the Natural Products Research Center (NPPN, now CPPN), linked to the Pharmacy School of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), was created by Walter Mors. In São Paulo, Otto Gottlieb was invited by FAPESP to organize a Natural Products laboratory at the Institute of Chemistry of the University of São Paulo (IQ-USP) (Pinto et al 2002), after a short period (1962)(1963)(1964)(1965) at the University of Brasilia (UnB), where he established an organic chemistry laboratory, but left as an act of protest after the military coup of 1964 and government intervention, which led to the dismissal of several professors (Faria 1997).…”

“…Some time after that, questions began to arise about the contracts awarded to private companies for remediation work. With respective differences of scale and extent, this uncertainty about the reasons for terminating a scientific process of excellence has also arisen in institutions like the Agricultural Chemistry Institute (Instituto de Química Agrícola) in Rio de Janeiro (Faria, 1997). At a deeper level, we believe there may have been resistance on the part of the oil industry to anything labelled "bio," "eco" or "environmental," as well as to ceding control of a process that paid millions of dollars.…”

“…Among the initial objectives of the Chemistry Institute, the certification of fertilizers, insecticides, and antifungal drugs are particularly relevant. In 1934, the institute became subordinated to the National Department of Plant Production, changing its name to Agricultural Chemistry Institute and establishing the Section of Soil Chemistry, Mineralogy and Genesis of Soils, under the administration of Fernando Ramos (Faria, 1997).…”
