Manejo do paciente no período perioperatório em neurocirurgia pediátrica

Abstract: The complexity of neurosurgical procedures in children is increasing, and observation and recognition of complications in pediatric intensive care units are fundamental. Anticipating complications in order to achieve an early treatment and adverse event prophylaxis can contribute to reduced morbidity and mortality and increased patients' safety.

“…Hypothalamic-hypophysis disorder ----characterized by pan-hypopituitarism, obesity, hyperphagia, obsession with the pursuit of food, and neuropsychological disorders ----dramatically affects the quality of life of affected children and their families. 26 Although the dose and the duration of treatment with peri-surgical dexamethasone has a short-term influence on post-surgical weight gain of craniopharyngioma patients, it cannot be said to affect long-term morbid obesity. Other factors can be correlated to the weight gain in this group, as observed by Harz and collaborators, who found that their obese craniopharyngioma patients had nearly normal caloric ingestion but reduced energy expenditure in comparison to the control group with a similar BMI.…”

“…However, neurosurgery has become a common and safe practice, however complex and needs in most cases a more intensified monitoring and admission to the intensive care unit [3]. The improvement of care for this population has been visible in these last few years, however, is still scarce the evaluation of adverse events and of mortality risk factors, where little is known about the possible complications that the child may have [4].…”
