Nursing care by telehealth: what is the influence of distance on communication?

Objective: Evaluate the perception of nurses regarding interpersonal communication while providing care via telehealth. Method: Qualitative research realized with seven nurses working in telehealth in Brazil, the sample was determined by data saturation. A questionnaire with open questions was applied and then content analysis of the dialogues was conducted, focusing on thematic analysis. Results: Four categories emerged from the dialogues: Understanding the importance of communication; the interpersonal relationship interfering with communication; Communicating via technology; and Learning the communication process. Final considerations: The perception of nurses working in telehealth in Brazil is that technology has facilitated their professional practice; however, in relation to the communication process, they believe it is harder to communicate by telehealth, mainly due to diffi culty in perceiving nonverbal signals. To overcome these diffi culties, they agreed that interpersonal communication is a skill that must be acquired during their professional training. Método: Pesquisa qualitativa, realizada com sete enfermeiros que atuam em telessaúde no Brasil, com amostra determinada pela saturação de dados. Aplicou-se um questionário com perguntas abertas e foi realizada análise de conteúdo dos discursos, com enfoque na análise temática. Resultados: Dos discursos emergiram quatro categorias: Entendendo a importância da comunicação; O relacionamento interpessoal interferindo na comunicação; Comunicando-se por meio da tecnologia; e Aprendendo o processo de comunicação. Considerações fi nais: A percepção dos enfermeiros que atuam em telessaúde no Brasil é de que a tecnologia tem facilitado sua prática profi ssional; porém, em relação ao processo de comunicação, creem que seja mais difícil se comunicar pela telessaúde, principalmente devido à difi culdade de percepção de sinais não verbais. Para superar essas difi culdades, concordam que comunicação interpessoal é uma competência que deve ser adquirida em sua formação profi ssional. RESUmoO A ansiedade e a preocupação dos pacientes decorrentes da obscuridade das informações relacionadas ao procedimento cirúrgico ortognático despertou o desenvolvimento deste estudo, que objetivou identificar as necessidades de informação do paciente sobre o cuidado pós-operató-rio da cirurgia ortognática. Trata-se de pesquisa exploratória qualitativa, que utilizou como método de coleta de dados o grupo focal com pacientes em pós-operatório de cirurgia ortognática de um ambulatório de cirurgia e traumatologia bucomaxilofacial. Os dados foram submetidos à análise de conteúdo para identificação das falas significativas para o alcance do objetivo. Entre os assuntos mais abordados, destacaram--se o longo tempo de recuperação e as dificuldades relacionadas à alimentação, higienização e redução dos sinais e sintomas pós-operatórios. It's an exploratory and qualitative research that used the focus group to collect the dada. Postoperative patients of orthognathic surgery from an oral and maxillofacial surgery and trauma ambulatory were invited to participate in the group. Through content analysis it was possible to identify the following problems related to the postoperative procedure: long recovery time, nutrition, oral hygiene, relief of postoperative signs and symptoms. Objective:To learn mothers' perceptions of the main care practices that are to be administered after their children's heart transplantation, as well as the main difficulties they experience. Method: A descriptive qualitative study conducted in March and April 2014, using the focus group technique for data gathering. Participants were 12 mothers who were monitoring their children in a hospital that is a reference for treating cardiopulmonary diseases. Speeches were recorded, transcribed, and organized around the care practices that the mothers performed after the children's heart transplantations, the mothers' main difficulties, their perceptions of their children's quality of life, and the use of educational materials to disseminate post-transplantation care practices. For data analysis, we used the content analysis technique. Results: The following were clarified: the schedule of immunosuppressive medication; food, environmental, and bodily and oral hygiene; the use of surgical masks; and keeping the children away from crowds. Conclusion:The study contributed to the situational diagnosis of the care administered by the mothers of transplanted children.
