Research on pinch plasma focus devices of hundred of kilojoules to tens of joules

Abstract: At present the Plasma Physics and Plasma Technology Group of the Comisión Chilena de Energía Nuclear (CCHEN) has the experimental facilities in order to study fast dense transient discharges in a wide range of energy and current, namely: I) energy from hundred of kilojoules to tens of joules, II) current from megaamperes to tens of kiloamperes. Also several diagnostics have been implemented. An overview of the work being carried out on dense pinch plasma focus discharges at the Comisión Chilena de Energía Nucl… Show more

“…Using the Dena's anode radius and the following working conditions: 16 kV, 288 µF, and ξ = 0.75, the energy density in the thermal phase is about 3.51 × 10 10 (J/m 3 ). Also, it is demonstrated by Soto et al [9] that the plasma energy density at the pinch moment for the Mather-type PF is proportional to E/V P ≈ 28ξU 0 /a 3 M (J/m 3 ). In general, the energy density at the pinch in various Mather-type PF devices has values on the order of (1 − 10) × 10 10 (J/m 3 ) [11].…”

“…In a miniature plasma focus, a single-frame image converter camera (4-ns exposure) was used to obtain plasma images in the visible range [4], [5]. The photographs showed formation of the plasma sheath on the insulator surface, radial compression of the current sheath, and the plasma detachment from the anode in the axial direction.…”
