Thermal lens spectrometry to study complex fluids

Abstract: We describe applications of Thermal Lens Spectrometry to study optical and thermal properties of lyotropic liquid crystal. In particular, we refer to methods for measurements of thermal di usivity anisotropy at di erent temperatures and as a function of the ferro uids doping. The theoretical basis for quantitative measurements is discussed together with the advantages and limitations as compared with conventional methods. Finally, future developments of photothermal techniques for these applications are assess… Show more

“…The thermal lens method is a sensitive technique used to measure the absolute thermal diffusivity value of liquids. This method is favourable due to its ultrahigh sensitivity, small volume of sample requirement, and its dependence on solvent thermo-optical properties [267,268]. Murshed et al [269] reported the enhancement in effective thermal diffusivity of nanofluids experimentally and found that they exceeded those calculated by (7).…”

“…Electronic mail: mlbaesso@uem.br ment presents, in principle, no extra difficulty. [28][29][30] It is precisely this aspect we take advantage of to carry on the thermal properties measurements of polymers as a function of temperature.…”

“…Pulses of ms-width of a continuous wave (cw) single-mode TEM 00 laser beam, obtained by a mechanical shutter, are used to excite the sample and to induce a thermal lens, which is probed by a second cw single-mode TEM 00 laser. The mode-mismatched dualbeam thermal lens technique apparatus is the usual one described elsewhere [37].…”
