Plasma processes in pulsar magnetospheres and eclipsing binary pulsar systems

Abstract: Plasma processes that may be responsible for pulsar radio emission and for eclipses observed for binary pulsars are discussed. High brightness temperature of pulsar radio emission implies that the radiation mechanism must be coherent. Several emission mechanisms are discussed. The high brightness temperature of radio emission also implies that nonlinear e ect on wave propagation through pulsar magnetospheric plasmas is important and may result in radio pulse microstructure or cause uctuation in dispersion meas… Show more

“…The nonlinear electrostatic spiky structures studied here may have important implications for pulsars radiation and their microstructure. Firstly, these ESW can modulate the pulsar electromagnetic radiation with a periodicity of (varying from 1 to 5 times the cyclotron period) leading to some microstructures via modulational instabilities (Hasegawa 1975; Luo 1998). These fine structures could have a constant .…”

“…Although the BEN observations in the pulsar magnetosphere have not been reported, the electronacoustic mode can play important role there. Firstly, it can modulate the pulsar electromagnetic radiation during their passage through the pulsar magnetosphere leading to modulational instability (Hasegawa 1975;Luo 1998). This would explain some features of microstructure in pulsar radiation.…”

“…This would explain some features of microstructure in pulsar radiation. Secondly, the coupling of electron-acoustic wave with an electromagnetic wave may produce, depending upon the beat conditions, higher or lower frequency electromagnetic waves by three-wave interaction process (Luo 1998).…”

“…We note that the magnitude of the observed DM variations, 8.5×10 −3 cm −3 pc, would in principle allow for such a possibility. Previous work, for instance, by Wu & Chian (1995) or Luo (1998), have proposed that DM variations arising from non-linearities in the pulsar magnetosphere may lead to a strong dependence between radio luminosity and DM fluctuations. Since we do not find any correlation between single-pulse DM estimates and S/N and that the observed arrival time variations do not show 𝜈 −2 scaling, the argument for a dispersive origin for the frequency dependent variations is not strongly supported.…”
