Characteristics of Bromus cartharticus Vahl (Poaceae) natural populations collected in the central area of Argentina

Abstract: Collection of Bromus catharticus Vahl was carried out in the Argentine humid and subhumid central area. Sixty-eight natural populations are conserved for medium and long term in Pergamino Germplasm Bank and in IRB Germplasm Bank, and ten morphological and agronomic traits were evaluated in the field during two years. There was variability for the traits considered among the accessions. Those populations from the subhumid area showed differences in valuable attributes for breeding. Exploration of marginal areas… Show more

“…Lemmas have a short awn (<5 mm) arising right below the apex. Bromus catharticus can produce both cleistogamous (closed) and chasmogamous (open) flowers, but its reproduction is mainly through self-pollination, although outcrossing can occur (Gutierrez and Pensiero 1998; Naranjo 1992; Rosso et al 2009; Table 2). The outcrossing rate for this species was estimated to be 1.8% (Morant et al 1994).…”

“…Czimber és Varga (1999) hazánkban meghonosodó Észak-Amerikai adventív fajként említik, Somlyay (2001) évtizedekkel az ezredfordulót megelőzően behurcolt, hazánkban átmenetileg megtelepedő Bromus-fajként, Mihály és Botta-Dukát ( 2004) is alkalmi megjelenésű neofitonként említik az özönnövények között a zöldrozsnokot, mely eredetileg D-Amerikából származik, és a mérsékeltövi területeken tudott elterjedni. A számos helyre, köztük Európába is betelepített fűfaj alapvetően takarmánynövény (Rosso et al, 2009) (Király, 2009). A faj hexaploid, alap kromoszómaszáma 7 (Naranjo, 1985cit.…”

“…(Prairie grass or Rescue grass) is an annual native species that grows naturally in the Argentine Pampas, Uruguay and South of Brazil and North Central area of Chile. It is widely used in mixed pastures consociated with legumes and it is considered the most important forage grass due to a high certified seed production in Argentina [11]. In the future, the forage market must count on varieties capable of growing in environments with limitations.…”
