Perspectives on biodiversity science in Brazil

Abstract: Biodiversity issues in Brazil have reached a critical point. On one hand, biodiversity science is increasing in quality and quantity, however on the other, habitat destruction in all major biomes still maintain alarmingly high rates. This paradox, from a scientific perspective, has two central tenets that scientists should focus on. First, although science related to biodiversity is of high standard in Brazil as compared to that of peers in the world, it is still not at the leading edge of research. Second, th… Show more

“…This communication problem is related to a large disagreement between them on the degree of scientific certainty required for the information backing up the threatened plant species label, although criteria do seem objective (IUCN 2001). A second, important assumption is that, despite all odds, the published list of threatened Brazilian plant species is the best one Brazil has ever produced, particularly due to the astonishing growth of biodiversity-related sciences in the country in recent years (Scarano 2007(Scarano , 2008a. These premises permeate our entire argument that is organised along four axes.…”

“…Postmodernism, as some call this era (Lyotard 1979), often places scientific subjects at the centre of value disputes where stakes are high (Sardar 2002). Biodiversity-related sciences, due to their complexity and youth (Scarano 2006(Scarano , 2007, often provide examples right. These two extremes of the gradient, interestingly, share a similar feature that is to consider man and nature as separate entities, which is a typical modern attitude (Latour 1993).…”

“…This follows an overall trend of increase in scientific output and visibility of Brazilian science as a whole, which is strongly backed up by the federal agencies that finance and evaluate scientific production and graduate training (Scarano 2007), including in their support of national journals. Thus, Acta should aim for an increasing international reach, while focusing on Brazilian scientific issues that are of worldly interest.…”
