Phytase enzyme in diets containing defatted rice bran for growing swine

Abstract: Organic phosphorus is poorly utilized by monogastric animals because they lack phytase, the enzyme that cleaves the ortho-phosphate groups from the phytate molecule. Diets fed to pigs are supplemented with inorganic P, and this can increase environmental pollution and diet costs. Sixty mixed sex, half-breed pigs, were used to evaluate the effect of increasing dietary levels of phytase (253, 759, 1265 and 1748 PU kg -1 feed) on animal performance as compared to a control without phytase but supplemented with … Show more

“…The results of phosphorus and calcium, which did not differ among the three evaluated treatments, diverge from a similar study conducted by Moreira et al (2003), in which the highest phosphorus concentrations in the plasma were detected in the control treatment without phytase and supplemented with inorganic phosphate. The presence of phosphorus in the diets is important for the fish growth and metabolism.…”

“…However, those studies did not evaluate the bioavailability of the phosphorus. Values for the total phosphorus content determination reported in the literature vary: 1.5% (NRC 1994) or 2.33% (Moreira et al 2003). Cúneo et al (2000) evaluated the dephytinization of soybean meal with phytase and observed a reduction of only 37% of the phytic acid content.…”

“…The Crude protein content in defatted rice bran is higher (20.02%) than corn (9.53%) and lesser than soya bran (20.02%), where Crude fiber content in rice bran is higher (10.73%) than both corn (4.78%) and soya bran (3.32%) (Moreira, 2003). The Phytate-P contents in rice bran and Wheat bran are 14.17 g/kg and 8.36 g/kg and their proportion % was 79.5 and 76.3 respectively (Cao et al, 2007).…”
