BackgroundThe rubber tree, Hevea brasiliensis, is a species native to the Brazilian Amazon region and it supplies almost all the world’s natural rubber, a strategic raw material for a variety of products. One of the major challenges for developing rubber tree plantations is adapting the plant to biotic and abiotic stress. Transcriptome analysis is one of the main approaches for identifying the complete set of active genes in a cell or tissue for a specific developmental stage or physiological condition.ResultsHere, we report on the sequencing, assembling, annotation and screening for molecular markers from a pool of H. brasiliensis tissues. A total of 17,166 contigs were successfully annotated. Then, 2,191 Single Nucleotide Variation (SNV) and 1.397 Simple Sequence Repeat (SSR) loci were discriminated from the sequences. From 306 putative, mainly non-synonymous SNVs located in CDS sequences, 191 were checked for their ability to characterize 23 Hevea genotypes by an allele-specific amplification technology. For 172 (90%), the nucleotide variation at the predicted genomic location was confirmed, thus validating the different steps from sequencing to the in silico detection of the SNVs.ConclusionsThis is the first study of the H. brasiliensis transcriptome, covering a wide range of tissues and organs, leading to the production of the first developed SNP markers. This process could be amplified to a larger set of in silico detected SNVs in expressed genes in order to increase the marker density in available and future genetic maps. The results obtained in this study will contribute to the H. brasiliensis genetic breeding program focused on improving of disease resistance and latex yield.

RESUMOEste trabalho descreve estimativas de fitomassa e de estoque de carbono em cultivo de pinhão no Vale do Paraíba Paulista utilizando equações alométricas desenvolvidas com base em análise de regressão, que consideraram a fitomassa como uma variável dependente de medições dendrométricas de fácil obtenção na planta. As estimativas foram validadas por meio de método destrutivo direto, ponderando o corte de árvores de diferentes alturas e estruturas. Quando comparado com outros modelos, a equação linear Y = 1,3 (h²d), em que Y é a biomassa (kg), h é a altura (m) e d é a projeção da copa (m), apresentou resultados confiáveis e erros não significativos para árvores de até 3,2 m de altura. Para o espaçamento de 4 × 3 m foi avaliado que o estoque de matéria seca variou entre 0,5 e 6 Mg ha -1 , enquanto o carbono armazenado na área pode chegar a 3 Mg C ha -1 .Palavras-chave: Jatropha curcas, bioenergia, mecanismo de desenvolvimento limpo. Allometric Equations for the Estimation of Jatropha Curcas Biomass ABSTRACTThis paper describes the estimation of biomass and carbon stock in Jatropha crops in the Vale do Paraíba region, Brazil, using allometric equations developed based on regression analysis which considered the biomass as a variable dependent on easily obtainable dendrometric measurements. The biomass estimated using allometric equations was validated by the destructive direct method based on the cutting of trees of different heights and structures. When compared with other models, the linear equation Y = 1.3 (h²d), where Y is the biomass (kg), h is the height (m), and d is the crown projection (m) showed reliable results and no significant errors to estimate trees up to 3.2 m tall. For the 4 × 3 m plant spacing, result evaluations showed that the stock of dry matter ranged from 0.5 to 6 Mg ha -1 , while the carbon stored in the area could reach 3 Mg C ha -1 .

PRODUÇÃO E DISTRIBUIÇÃO DA BIOMASSA DE Jatropha curcas NO SEMIÁRIDO BRASILEIRO RESUMO: Com o objetivo de avaliar a produção e distribuição da biomassa da parte aérea de diferentes genótipos de pinhão-manso no semiárido brasileiro, foi implantado um experimento na Fazenda Gabriela, localizada no município de Santa Maria da Boa Vista, Pernambuco. O delineamento experimental adotado foi em blocos casualizados, com dez tratamentos (genótipos de pinhão-manso) e três repetições, em parcelas lineares de seis plantas, com bordadura simples e espaçamento de 3,0 x 2,0 m. Foram aplicadas uma adubação correspondente a 150 g de NPK (06:24:12) por cova no plantio e duas adubações de cobertura com 150 g . planta -1 de NPK (10:10:10) aos seis e aos doze meses de idade. As plantas foram irrigadas semanalmente por gotejamento com uma aplicação média de 20 litros de água por planta durante o período de estiagem da região. Aos 24 meses de idade, foi medida a altura total das plantas, o diâmetro médio das bifurcações a 1,30 m da superfície do solo e o número de bifurcações a 0,5 m de altura. Foram feitas 26 colheitas semanais de frutos/sementes. Os frutos foram colhidos maduros, antes de sua queda ao chão, durante sete meses. Os genótipos apresentaram elevada uniformidade agronômica, exceto para a variável número de bifurcações, onde o genótipo 1701 foi superior aos genótipos 1501, 1602, 1703 e 1601. A produção de biomassa dos genótipos em condições irrigadas no semiárido é elevada e a distribuição da biomassa dos genótipos nos diferentes componentes seguiu a ordem decrescente: raiz>frutos>galhos grossos>folhas>casca>galhos finos. PRODUCTION AND DISTRIBUTION OF Jatropha curcas BIOMASS IN THE BRAZILIAN SEMIARIDABSTRACT: In order to assess production and distribution of biomass shoots of different genotypes of Jatropha curcas under irrigation in the semiarid region of Pernambuco, Brazil, an experiment was established in Gabriela Farm, in the municipality of Santa Maria da Boa Vista-PE. The experimental design was randomized blocks with ten treatments (genotypes of Jatropha curcas), and three replications in row plots of six plants, with a single border and spacing of 3.0 x 2.0 m. Plants were fertilized with 150 g of NPK (06:24:12) at planting time, and a topdressing with 150 g . planta -1 NPK (10:10:10) applied at six and twelve months of age. The plants were irrigated weekly using a dripping system with an average water application of 20 l . plant -1 during the dry period of the region. At 24 months of age, the overall height of the plants, the average diameter of bifurcations at 1.30m from the soil level and the number of bifurcations at 0.5 m of height were evaluated. Twenty six fruit/ seed harvests were done weekly. Fruits were harvested ripe, before falling on the ground, for seven months. To determine dry biomass, the plants were cut at 0.30 m from soil level.
