The present study evaluated the efficacy of Acmella oleracea extract, and the susceptibility of semiengorged R. sanguineus females exposed to different concentrations of the extract, with lethal concentration 50 % (LC 50) and confidence interval 95%. The ticks were mounted on Petri dishes and immersed in the different concentrations of the extract, distilled water or ethanol 50% + DMSO 1% for 5 minutes, dried and kept in BOD incubator for 7 days. The results showed the daily mortality rate among semi-engorged R. sanguineus females at different concentrations of the extract. The mortality data obtained in bioassay 2 were subjected to Probit analysis, through which a LC 50 of 24,883 mg/ml (limits: 22,331 to 28,003 mg/ml) was determined, at a 95% confidence interval. Thus, this study demonstrated the sensitivity and susceptibility of semi-engorged R. sanguineus females to Acmella oleracea extract. The acaricidal potential was effective as from the application of the extract at the concentration of 12.5 mg/ml and was dose-dependent. i.e., higher mortality rates were observed as the concentration increased, with LC 50 of 24,883 mg/ml reaching 100% at the concentration of 100 mg/ml in 24h.

The Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus tick is a major concern for the livestock market worldwide, as it causes serious economic damage. Plant-derived acaricides are an attractive alternative to control this ectoparasite and limit the development of resistance. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the acaricidal activity of Furcraea foetida leaf extract against engorged female R. (B.) microplus ticks. Our in vitro bioassays showed that the crude extract of leaves from F. foetida caused hemorrhagic swelling and skin lesions in the ticks, and three days of treatment caused 100% mortality. Dose-response assay indicated that this toxicity effect was dose-dependent. Similar effects were observed when the crude extract from F. foetida leaves was denatured by boiling at 100°C. These results suggest that the toxicity of the leaf extract might be associated with thermostable biomolecules. Together, our results show for the first time that the crude extract of F. foetida leaves has acaricidal activity against engorged female R. (B.) microplus ticks and it acts in a dose-dependent manner.

RESUMOO planejamento satisfatório de novos alvos contra os estágios do parasito da malária esbarra nas lacunas sobre o conhecimento de plantas com potencial terapêutico, associadas à desvalorização das informações empíricas e à dispersão destas plantas medicinais arquivadas na memória da população usuária. No presente estudo, foi realizada uma avaliação etnobotânica de plantas com potencial medicinal utilizadas pelos pacientes com a infecção. Os participantes eram residentes de duas localidades da Amazônia ocidental, Porto Velho e Triunfo, entre as regiões urbana e rural. Foram entrevistadas 62 pessoas tidas como informantes, dos quais 62,9% afirmaram que utilizam a terapia natural com potencial medicinal. Foram relatadas 12 plantas pertencentes a 10 famílias: Asteraceae (2 etnoespécies), Rubiaceae (2 etnoespécies), Arecaceae, Lamiacea, Solanaceae, Fabaceae, Cucurbiaceae, Caprifoliaceae, Euphorbiaceae com 1 etnoespécie cada; as espécies mais citadas foram o Plectranthus barbatus Andrews (Boldo) e o Bidens pilosa L. (Picão), sendo as folhas as partes mais utilizadas.
