-Anthropic action, such as the soil use and management systems, promote changes in the soil structure. These changes might hamper the development of plants in soil management practices that involve its mobilization, and the negative effects might be increased due to intensive use. The aim of this study was to evaluate the physico-hydrical properties of a Haplohumox in integrated production systems under different soil managements. The soil superficial (0.0-0.10 m) and subsuperficial (0.10-0.20 m) layers were evaluated in the different systems: conventional tillage (CT), minimum tillage (MT), no-tillage (NT) and chiseled no-tillage (CNT), taking into consideration the annual ryegrass cropped for different uses [cover crop (C), grazing (G) and silage (S)] during the winter. Soil bulk density (Db), total porosity (TP), macro (Ma) and microporosity (Mi), water retention curves (SWRC) and water retention due to pore size (r) were determined. The annual ryegrass used as C produced lower Db and Mi and higher TP and Ma in CT, MT and CNT systems. No difference was verified between G and S in any of the management systems or soil layers. The superficial layer SWRC presented similar behavior regarding CT, MT and CNT. Under NT, C resulted in higher water retention. However, G and S provided higher water retention due to the pore size in this system. Key words: Haplohumox. No-tillage. Soil physical quality. Crop-livestock integration. Agriculture sustainability.RESUMO -As ações antrópicas, como os sistemas de uso e manejo do solo, promovem alterações em sua estrutura. Estas alterações podem ser restritivas ao desenvolvimento das plantas em manejos do solo que envolva sua mobilização, tendo seus efeitos negativos potencializados pela maior intensificação de uso. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar os atributos físico-hídricos de um Latossolo Bruno argiloso em sistemas integrados de produção sob distintos manejos de solo. Para isso avaliou-se a camada superficial (0.0-0.10 m) e subsuperficial (0.10-0.20 m) do solo nos sistemas de cultivo convencional (CT), mínimo (MT), plantio direto (NT) e plantio direto escarificado (CNT) sob diferentes usos da cultura do azevém [planta de cobertura (C), pastejo (G) e silagem (S)]. Determinou-se a densidade (Db), porosidade total (TP), macro (Ma) e microporosidade (Mi), as curvas de retenção de água (CRA) e a retenção de água em função do raio de poro (r). O uso do azevém como C proporcionou menores Db e Mi e maiores TP e Ma nos sistemas CT, MT e CNT. Não foram verificadas diferenças entre G e S para todos os manejos, em ambas as camadas de solo. As CRA da camada superficial entre CT, MT e CNT apresentaram comportamento semelhante. No NT, C proporcionou uma maior retenção de água. Resumo -No estado de Mato Grosso, a área de plantio com o algodão está concentrada principalmente nos chapadões, onde o clima Aw determina uma alternância entre um período chuvoso e outro seco, e onde os solos LatossoloVermelho-Amarelo e Latossolo Vermelho são predominantes. Um dos fatores que determinam o sucesso no cultivo dessa espécie é justamente o conhecimento prévio das propriedades hidráulicas dos solos que, por diferentes razões não são variáveis de amplo conhecimento nas áreas de produção. Neste trabalho objetivou-se verificar a adequação de funções de pedotransferência para avaliar a capacidade de retenção de água dos solos de regiões produtoras de algodão em Mato Grosso, levando-se em consideração a densidade aparente e conteúdo de argila, silte e areia do solo. Para isso, foram coletadas amostras de solo em 21 talhões de produção de algodão do Mato Grosso, para determinação da distribuição do tamanho de partículas, da densidade aparente e da curva de retenção de água no solo. Na região de produção de algodão em Mato Grosso, as funções de pedotransferência, 0,334-0,0003 Ar e 0,247-0,0003 Ar, para estimativas dos conteúdos de água nas tensões de 0,033 e 1,5 MPa, respectivamente, são adequadas para avaliar a capacidade de retenção de água dos solos dos talhões de cultivo de algodão nesse Estado. Potencial mátrico.Abstract -In the state of Mato Grosso, the area planted with cotton is mainly concentrated in the plains, where the climate Aw determines an alternation between a rainy and a dry season, and where the soil is predominant Red-Yellow Latosol and Red Latosol (Oxisol). One of the factors that determine success in cultivation of this species is just the prior knowledge of the hydraulic properties of soils which, for various reasons, are not variables of extensive knowledge in the areas of production. This study aimed to verify the adequacy of pedotransfer functions to evaluate the soil water retention capacity in the cotton regions in Mato Grosso, taking into account the bulk density and content of clay, silt and sand soil. For this, soil samples were collected in 21 plots of commercial production of cotton in the state of Mato Grosso to determinate the particle size distribution, bulk density, and water retention curve in soil. In the region of cotton production in Mato Grosso, the pedotransfer functions, 0,334 -0,0003 Ar and 0,247 -0,0003 Ar, for estimating the water content in the tensions of 0.033 and 1.5 MPa, respectively, are suitable to evaluate the water retention capacity of the soils of the cotton production plots in this state.

Water retention in soil is used in many agronomic and environmental applications, but its direct measurement is timeconsuming and expensive. Therefore, pedotransfer functions (PTFs) are alternatives to obtain this information faster and more economically. The objectives of this study were to generate and validate PTFs to estimate the water content at potentials of -33 kPa (field capacity) and -1500 kPa (permanent wilting point) for different soil classes from the central-south portion of Rio Grande do Sul State. The physical and chemical analyses database from soil surveys of the Celulose Riograndense Corp were used. The database is composed of particle size distribution (coarse and fine sand, silt and clay), soil organic matter, and water content data at the above mentioned potentials, besides other information concerning the behavior of the soil classes at field conditions. Firstly, the data were stratified by soil classes and depths, and then 70% of the data were separated for PTF generation and 30% for validation. PTFs were generated for each specific soil class and also general PTFs which were not stratified by soil class, by means of stepwise multiple regression. In most situations, PTFs for a specific soil class showed a better fit than the general PTFs. Proper adjustment of the data showed that the water retention values at potentials of -33 kPa and -1500 kPa can be estimated for the soils from the central-south portion of Rio Grande do Sul State that do not have such analyses through the use of PTFs.Index terms: Permanent wilting point, field capacity, water retention curve. RESUMOA retenção de água no solo é utilizada em diversas aplicações agronômicas e ambientais, porém sua medição direta consome tempo e dinheiro. Por isso, funções de pedotransferência (FPTs) são alternativas para a obtenção dessas informações de forma mais rápida e econômica. Neste trabalho, objetivou-se gerar e validar FPTs, para estimar o conteúdo de água nos potenciais de -33 kPa (capacidade de campo) e -1500 kPa (ponto de murcha permanente) para diferentes classes de solos na porção centro-sul do Rio Grande do Sul. Utilizou-se o banco de dados de análises físicas e químicas dos levantamentos de solos da empresa Celulose Riograndense, que é composto por dados de textura (areia grossa e fina, silte e argila), matéria orgânica do solo e dados de conteúdo de água nos potenciais supracitados, entre outras informações sobre o comportamento das classes de solo em condições de campo. Primeiramente, os dados foram estratificados por classes de solos e profundidades e, posteriormente, 70% dos dados foram separados para geração das FPTs e 30% para validação. Geraram-se FPTs específicas para cada classe de solo e também FPTs gerais, sem estratificação por classe de solos, por meio de regressão múltipla stepwise. Na maioria das situações, as FPTs específicas por classe de solo apresentaram melhor ajuste do que as FPTs gerais.
