Two experiments (EXP 1 and EXP 2) were conducted to compare soybean oil (SO) and semi-refined rice oil (RBO) added to broilers diets. In EXP 1, 400 male Ross x Ross 308 broilers were reared in battery cages, and their performance was evaluated. A metabolism assay was performed. In EXP 2, 1344 broilers from the same strain were reared in floor pens with rice husks litter. In addition to performance, carcass yield and meat oxidative stability were evaluated. In both EXP, birds were distributed in a 2x4 factorial arrangement, with two types of oils (SO or RBO) and four oil inclusion levels (1%, 2.5%, 4%, or 5.5%). Two periods were considered: starter (1 to 21 days of age) and grower (22 to 42 days). In both EXP, oil type had no influence on starter performance. Although treatments promoted similar in weight gain (WG) and feed intake (FI), grower birds fed RBO had better feed conversion (FCR) in EXP 2, but not in EXP1. In both trials, increasing dietary oil levels negatively influenced FI and positively FCR. Weight gain was similar among all treatments in EXP 1, whereas in EXP 2, WG was higher when 4 and 5.5% oil was included in the feed. RBO presented 94% fat metabolizability, and crude energy and metabolizable energy levels of 9.260 and 8.714 kcal/kg, respectively. Carcass yield was not influenced by oil type; however, oil inclusion level negatively affected breast yield. The experimental treatments had no effect on meat oxidative stability. RBO can be used as an alternative to soybean oil in broilers diets

The use of soy by-products in poultry feed has proven to be an important sustainable alternative, being capable of minimizing the environmental damage caused by the disposal of these residues and at the same time reducing the cost of production. However, for the use of these by-products in poultry feeding, it is necessary to know their chemical composition, antinutritional factors and also necessary measures to reduce these factors, as well as the best levels of inclusion that must meet the nutritional requirements of the animals in each production phase. In this context, the purpose of this review is to demonstrate the potential use of soy by-products (soy husk, soy acid oil, glycerin, soybean chopsticks, soy gum and okara) in the feeding of broilers, laying hens and cutting and laying quails, as well as the adverse effects that each can cause on animal performance. To carry out this review, analysis was carried out in several scientific studies that used soy by-products in the feeding of broilers and laying hens. It can be concluded that the potential for using soy by-products in Brazil is enormous, which expands the alternative ingredients that can replace soybean meals in poultry feed, without causing damage to performance, intestinal health, biochemical and hematological parameters, in addition to reduce the environmental pollution generated by the inappropriate disposal of these residues, as these ingredients could be a way to reduce the costs of diets.

Canola and coconut oils in the feed of European quails (Coturnix coturnix)

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the inclusion of canola and coconut oils to diets of European quail (Coturnix coturnix) over performance and carcass yield. One hundred and ninety-two quail (eight-days old) were randomly allocated to four dietary treatments with six replicates of eight birds each. The treatments were arranged in a factorial 2×2 scheme with two sources of dietary oil containing two levels of canola and coconut oils (1 and 2%). For performance variables, the final weight was evaluated, and the carcass variables were feed intake, weight gain, and feed conversion. A significant difference was observed between treatments for feed intake, with the inclusion of 2% canola oil providing higher intake. There was also significant effect for carcass characteristics on weight at fasting, eviscerated carcass, liver and gizzard weights, as well as liver, heart, and gizzard yields. The inclusion of vegetable oil such as canola and coconut oils in diets for European quail at the levels of 1 and 2% can be performed with no negative effect on performance from 8 to 42 days of age.
