BackgroundIn preventing the transfer of HIV to their children, the Ministry of Health in Mozambique recommends all couples follow medical advice prior to a pregnancy. However, little is known about how such women experience pregnancy, nor the values they adhere to when making childbearing decisions. This qualitative study explores perceptions and decision-making processes regarding pregnancy among HIV positive women in rural Maputo Province.MethodsIn-depth interviews and five focus group discussions with fifty-nine women who had recently become mothers were carried out. In addition, six semi-structured interviews were held with maternity and child health nurses. The ethnographic methods employed here were guided by Bourdieu’s practice theory.ResultsThe study indicated that women often perceived pregnancy as a test of fertility and identity. It was not only viewed as a rite of passage from childhood to womanhood, but also as a duty for married women to have children. Most women did not follow recommended medical advice prior to gestation. This was primarily due to perceptions that decision-making about pregnancy was regarded as a private issue not requiring consultation with a healthcare provider. Additionally, stigmatisation of women living with HIV, lack of knowledge about the need to consult a healthcare provider prior to pregnancy, and unintended pregnancy due to inadequate use of contraceptive were crucial factors.ConclusionWomen’s experiences and decisions regarding pregnancy are more influenced by social and cultural norms than medical advice. Therefore, education concerning sexual and reproductive health in relation to HIV/AIDS and childbearing is recommended. In particular, we recommend maternal and child healthcare nurses need to be sensitive to women’s perceptions and the cultural context of maternity when providing information about sexual and reproductive health.

Se as mulheres "desenvolvem dispositivos que, agradando ao parceiro, lhes confere algum poder" -como seria o caso da própria fabricação do corpo através das práticas vaginais de alongamento da labia minora (Bagnol e Mariano, 2009) -parece mais interessante entender o que elas querem dizer com isso do que já estipular que este poder só pode ser uma pequena (e inócua) resistência à dominação masculina.…”

Resumo O artigo pretende trazer à tona as contribuições do que se poderia chamar uma perspectiva africana para os estudos de gênero e estudos feministas, a partir das obras e provocações das autoras nigerianas Ifi Amadiume e Oyèrónké Oyěwùmí, matizando suas críticas com discussões dos estudos de gênero, baseadas, sobretudo, nos pensamentos de Judith Butler e Marilyn Strathern. Em seguida trago o caso particular da autora dinamarquesa Signe Arnfred e seu trabalho de campo no norte de Moçambique para pensar como tanto a etnografia quanto os deslocamentos teóricos possibilitados pela crítica africana ao feminismo infletiram em seu trabalho, especificamente no que concerne a análise dos ritos de iniciação femininos em contextos macuas.

A study on how Zambian migrants living in Cape Town perceive and experience the implications of labial elongation on women's health was conducted. Labia minora elongation (LME) is a genital modification that some women in east and southern Africa practice. This tradition is not common in Western Cape province (southwestern part of South Africa). The aim of this article is to discuss the methodological choices made in the design and conduct of this study, in which a White European male interviewed the female study participants on the health implications of a practice that is considered a woman's private issue. Constructivist grounded theory informed by a feminist perspective was chosen as the most suitable methodological approach to enable cogeneration of knowledge with the female participants. The methods and tools used by the lead investigator facilitated access to the participants' emic views. Grounded theory methodology holds the potential to be an appropriate methodological approach for researchers who seek to erode the power imbalances influencing research processes that aim to explore the associated meanings and health implications of female genital modifications, such as LME, as narrated by the women who practice them.
