Microtensile bond strength test and failure analysis to assess bonding characteristics of different adhesion approaches to ground versus unground enamel

Abstract: This study evaluated the bonding characteristics to ground and unground enamel obtained with different strategies. For this purpose, 24 sound third-molars were bisected mesiodistally to obtain tooth halves. A flat enamel area was delimited in the tooth sections, which were randomly distributed into 8 groups (n=6), according to the enamel condition (ground and unground) and adhesive system (Adper Single Bond 2 -SB2; Adper Prompt L-Pop -PLP; Adper Prompt -AD; Clearfil SE Bond -SE). Each system was applied accord… Show more

“…In self-etch approach, the shallower etching depth and less demineralization of enamel due to lower acidity, and simultaneous etching and adhesive infiltration has been reported. When comparing to acid-etching, SE adhesives create shallower and fewer resin tags 26 27 The less retentive pattern in the debonded surface of SBU in SE mode group was observed under SEM.…”

“…Studies have also shown that bonding to ground versus unprepared enamel yields similar bond strengths of self-etching adhesives 8 . Since the evidence in the subject remains controversial, manufacturers often recommend a preliminary phosphoric acid etching step prior to the application of mild self-etch adhesives to improve the bond strength to enamel 6,12,29 .…”

“…In order to improve the accuracy of bond strength evaluation, Sano et al (1) proposed the microtensile bond testing (µTBS). This test has been widely used (2,3); nevertheless, there are reports in the literature that this is not an easy method to be applied in enamel due to its brittleness and the stresses generated during specimen preparation that can lead to fracture of enamel-resin interface (4).…”
