The role of surface treatments on the bond between acrylic denture base and teeth

Abstract: The aim of this study was to compare the bond strength between acrylic denture base and teeth subjected to 6 surface treatments. Ninety-six specimens were made with poly(methylmethacrylate) teeth bonded to a microwave-polymerized acrylic denture base material. The specimens were distributed into 6 groups (n=16) according to surface treatments: CT - no treatment (control); MN - methylmethacrylate monomer etching; AO - 50-microm-particle aluminum oxide air abrasion; BR - glaze removal with a round bur; ST - surf… Show more

“…41,49 Hence, the teeth were ground using 150 grit abrasive paper to simulate cutting of the bonding surface with a medium to rough carbide bur. 22,49,50 Gross-mechanical retentions were applied only for Eclipse, as a specific conditioning liquid is not available in Germany (K.D. Brunner, Degudent, personal communication).…”

“…Adding mechanical retention to the denture base acrylic resin has also been investigated. Removing the glazed surface of the ridge lap portion of the denture tooth with air abrasion or grinding likely increases the bond strength of the acrylic resin denture tooth to the acrylic resin denture base . Other techniques include adding retentive grooves, a diatoric recess, and a mechanical “cingulum ledge lock” to improve bonding strength strength …”
