Effect of light-curing methods on resin cement knoop hardness at different depths

Abstract: This study evaluated, using Knoop hardness test, the polymerization depth of Rely-X dual-cured resin cement activated by chemical reaction alone (control group) or by chemical/physical mode with light curing through a 1.5-mm-thick ceramic layer (HeraCeram). Bovine incisors had their buccal surface flattened and hybridized. On this surface, a rubber mould (5 mm diameter; 1 mm high) was bulk filled with cement. Either a polyester strip or a 1.5-mm-thick disc of the veneering material was seated over this set. Li… Show more

“…Sinhoreti et al . [18] observed lower microhardness in deeper regions of the root canal, where less light is delivered. Pedreira et al .,[13] however, reported that microhardness did not vary significantly along the apical thirds of the roots for Panavia and Unicem.…”

“…19,28 Some studies have demonstrated that RelyX ARC reaches a low degree of conversion and hardness in the selfcuring mode within 10 min, in comparison to other dual-cured resin cements, 13,19 but a significant increase in hardness has been observed over time. 19,28 A possible explanation for the low KHN values observed in the present study even 24 h after initial polymerization may be related to storage conditions.…”

“…19,28 Some studies have demonstrated that RelyX ARC reaches a low degree of conversion and hardness in the selfcuring mode within 10 min, in comparison to other dual-cured resin cements, 13,19 but a significant increase in hardness has been observed over time. 19,28 A possible explanation for the low KHN values observed in the present study even 24 h after initial polymerization may be related to storage conditions. Considering that low monomer conversion values are observed within 10 min when RelyX ARC was allowed to self-cure, 10,13 it is possible that the storage of poorly polymerized specimens in humidity resulted in fast water diffusion into the polymer matrix as previously demonstrated in other studies.…”
