Lipoprotein (a) and cardiovascular risk factors in children and adolescents

Abstract: OBJECTIVE: To review the relationship between lipoprotein (a) [Lp(a)] and other risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD) in children and adolescents. DATA SOURCES: This systematic review included studies from 2001 to 2011, a ten-year time period. Epidemiological studies with children and/or adolescents published in English, Portuguese or Spanish and fully available online were included. The searches were performed in Science Direct, PubMed/Medline, BVS (Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde) and Cochrane Library da… Show more

“…Additional and independent risk factor for CHD is represented by high lipoprotein (a) [Lp(a)] levels, studied in several patient groups [159][160][161]. The association between its plasma levels and the condition of childhood obesity is unclear [162]. Glowinska et al [163] studied lipid profiles in obese, hypertensive and diabetic young patients showing significant changes in lipid metabolism, including Lp(a), apolipoprotein A (Apo A) and Apo B levels.…”

“…34 Recent evidence indicates that children and adolescents with high ApoB and low ApoA1 concentrations may show signs of atherosclerosis at earlier ages than those of the same age with normal concentrations of these biochemical parameters. 35 Scientific evidence highlights that exposure to these risk factors in the first cycles of life can contribute to the development of cardiovascular changes in later periods of life. 31,36…”

“…Aquí, se observó que los individuos con concentraciones altas de estradiol mostraban concentraciones bajas de triglicéridos y c-VLDL. Evidencia científica muestra que los estrógenos tienen una amplia variedad de efectos sobre el perfil de lípidos en hombres y mujeres (19,21), y se describen cambios significativos en los niveles de lípidos en suero y de lipoproteínas durante la pubertad (38)(39)(40)(41).…”
