The use of a biocompatible cement in endodontic surgery. A randomized clinical trial 1

Abstract: PURPOSE:To evaluate the clinical applicability of Pozzolana Biologic Silva cement (PBS ® ) in endodontic surgery. METHODS:Persistent apical periodontitis was diagnosed in 30 teeth of 12 patients by cone-beam computed tomography (CT). All patients had 2 or 4 affected teeth and underwent endodontic surgery with root-end filling. Patients with 2 affected teeth had one tooth (control) treated with mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA-Angelus ® ) as a root-end filling material, and the other tooth treated with PBS (expe… Show more

“…Several investigators conducted short‐term follow‐up of cases that received root‐end fillings with new BECs (Silva et al . ). The results of studies with short‐term follow‐up may not indicate real treatment outcomes that will occur over an extended period (Kruse et al .…”

“…And for Platt 2004, the methods used to prepare the cavity di ered in both randomised groups. One study (Silva 2016) was excluded because the following-up period was too short (only 6 months). We excluded four studies (Burstein 2001;Nordenram 1970;Pantschev 1994;Rud 1996) because the authors did not mention randomisation.…”

“…However, bone failures need to be regenerated prior to implant installation that will replace the dental root, due to the lack of bone structure to support the implant. This process, called guided bone regeneration (GBR) requires time, when conventional techniques such as autologous, homologous, or allogeneic bone grafts are used 7,12,20 and thus aesthetics will be compromised 1 .…”

“…These cements are based on the Portland cement used in civil construction, whose raw material is limestone 10,22 . Recent studies have allowed the development of biological cement (PBS ® CIMMO rapid set) with the addition of additives (natural elements responsible for the increase of cement strength as well as the setting time) and without radioactivity 12 . The experimental and clinical studies that culminated in the development of PBS ® CIMMO rapid set were designed for installation in crowns and dental root structures in situations called unconventional, because no protocols had been developed for these applications, and the roots were condemned [10][11][12][13][14]23 .…”
