Laparoscopic correction of experimentally induced diaphragmatic rupture in dogs

Abstract: PURPOSE:To describe the dog as a model for studying laparoscopic correction of experimental diaphragmatic ruptures. METHODS:Five male dogs were used in this study. Under laparoscopic approach, a defect of 7cm was created on the left ventral insertion of the diaphragm. Fourteen days after this procedure, the abdomen was explored using laparoscopic access and the diaphragmatic defect was corrected with intracorporeal suture. The dislocated organs, surgical time, and suturing time were recorded. Analgesia and cli… Show more

“…The time required for laparoscopic diaphragm reconstruction was similar (Beck et al., 2004 ; Brun et al., 2010 ) or longer (Souza et al., 2015 ) than described in previous studies; however, it is not possible to directly compare these results due to the visible methodological differences between the models, including the type of diaphragm defect, access, and reconstruction techniques used. Hernia repair (step T3) was longer in the GS group than in the mesh group.…”

“…The use of three access ports for laparoscopic reconstruction of diaphragmatic hernias has been previously described (Beck et al., 2004 ; Brun, 2017 , 2010 ; Monnet & Fransson, 2015 ; Souza et al., 2015 ). In this study, three portal accesses in five configurations were used for laparoscopic hernia repair.…”

“…Several reports have documented diaphragmatic rupture in animals such as koalas [5] and a cat [13], caused by road traffic accidents, as well as in foals [12] and horses [11] with or without history of injury. A recent study also documented the laparoscopic correction of experimentally induced diaphragmatic rupture in dogs [15]. Here, we report a rare case of diaphragmatic rupture caused by rib fracture in a sika deer during exhibition at a zoo.…”

“…More recently, however, laparoscopic and thoracoscopic techniques for herniorrhaphy have gained popularity due to the well-documented benefits of minimally invasive surgery. [9][10][11][12][13][14] The following case report describes the clinical features, imaging findings, surgical approach and outcome of an elderly dog that underwent laparoscopic herniorrhaphy to repair an incidentally diagnosed pleuroperitoneal hernia.…”
