Conjunctival inflammation in patients under topical glaucoma treatment with indication to surgery

Abstract: PURPOSE:To compare the frequency of conjunctival HLA-DR expression (a surrogate marker for inflammation) in eyes treated with topical prostaglandin analogues versus eyes treated with other topical antiglaucomatous drugs. METHODS: Patients diagnosed with primary open-angle glaucoma presenting indication for trabeculectomy were divided in groups according to the use or not of prostaglandin analogues. All subjects were treated with the maximum tolerated dose of antiglaucomatous drugs until the date of the surgery… Show more

“…Another problem making management of glaucoma somewhat problematic is that a commonly prescribed drug class, prostaglandin analogues, can induce inflammation by upregulating proinflammatory cytokine gene expression even though they stably reduce intraocular pressure [ 11 , 12 ]. There are several reports describing an inverse correlation between subclinical inflammation and filtration surgery outcome.…”

“…Chang et al (34) suggested increasing mast cell numbers as a possible indicator of preoperative glaucoma surgery inflammation was observed in the conjunctiva of glaucoma patients. In addition, Furtado et al (35) have showed that inflammation in patients under topical glaucoma is an indicator following treatment with indication to surgery. Vohra et al (36) have indicated that the role of inflammation in the pathogenesis of glaucoma.…”
