Histology of the rectus abdominis muscle in rats subjected to cranial and caudal devascularization

Abstract: PURPOSE: To investigate the microscopic changes in the rectus abdominis muscle in rats subjected to five delay procedure. METHODS: 30 male holtzmann rats, weighting between 250 and 350 grams, were used. The animals were divided into five groups (n=6): A - cranial section of the right muscle; B - caudal section of the right muscle; C - craniocaudal section of the right muscle; D - cranial section reflecting the right muscle in the craniocaudal direction; E - caudal section reflecting the right muscle in… Show more

“…The effects of general anesthetics on cardiac output, arterial blood pressure and regional blood flow have been documented, while the effects of spinal anesthesia on microcirculation in the transferred tissue have yet to be established experimentally (Costa et al, 2012;Schusterman et al, 1992;Carden et al, 2000). The present study evaluates the effect of anesthetic techniques on flap microcirculation, and thus it contributes to literature.…”

“…Flaps are commonly used in plastic and reconstructive surgery for the repair of tissue defects occurring due to various etiologies, such as trauma or tumor excision (Nahai et al, 1984;Taylor et al, 1994;Özdemir et al, 2017;Mathes et al, 1977;Costa et al, 2012). In flap surgeries, the success of operation is dependent upon the experience of surgeon, as well as technical factors.…”

“…By day 14, significantly higher scores were recorded in all parameters than on day zero. These scores probably represent the effects of the inflammatory response during wound healing, compromised blood flow, and the reperfusion injury that the ST flap normally developed 2 wk postoperatively at its distal part, where the sample points were harvested [ 28 29 30 31 ]. The 6- and 12-mon examination samples were characterized mostly by muscle cell degeneration ( Fig.…”

“…All samples were processed using standard techniques and stained with haematoxylin and eosin. The stained sections were evaluated to assess inflammation, muscle cell degeneration, muscle cell necrosis, neovascularization, fibrosis, and edema quantitatively classified as follows: 0 (normal), no alterations present; 1 (+), alterations up to 33%; 2 (++), alterations between 34% and 66%; 3 (+++), alterations between 67% and 100% [ 28 29 30 31 ].…”
