Histological and histomorphometric evaluation of the retina of mice infected with Schistosoma mansoni in its hepatosplenic form

Abstract: The absence of findings in this study does not exclude that hemodynamic and autoregulation changes associated with hepatosplenic schistosomiasis could be correlated to retinal manifestations. It is necessary that other methods with a high parasite infection should be performed.

“…However, this is not the case in our study, where hamsters were systemically infected in a trial to imitate the natural route of infection that occurs in humans. A similar study (Remígio et al , 2009) detected a retinal granuloma in only one case with otherwise normal architecture and thickness of the retina. They suggested that this may be due to a low level of parasite infection.…”

“… 2 , 4 Interestingly, these could not be demonstrated on prior MRI scans, probably because of their small size. Remigio et al 5 have previously reported a presumed retinal granuloma in one out of 25 (4%) Swiss mice infected with S. mansoni (exposing the tails to a suspension of 40 cercariae). Ismail et al 6 found deposition of S. mansoni antigen in the eyes of 17 of 50 (35%) hamsters infected by S. mansoni cercarie.…”
