Evaluation of healing prosthetic materials polyester mesh resorbable film and collagen elastin matrix /polypropylene used in rabbits abdominal wall defects

Abstract: PURPOSE: To compare polyester with absorbable layer prosthesis with collagen-elastin/polypropylene prosthesis in the repair of abdominal wall defects. METHODS: The 16 studied rabbits were divided in groups A and B (euthanized on the 30th and 60th days, after the implant of the mesh). The animals underwent laparotomy and received a 2cm wall "defect" on each side of the Alba linea. The repair was made with the suture of a polyester mesh with absorbable film on the left side of the Alba Linea and with collagen-el… Show more

“…The external layer of these meshes is often built of polypropylene or polyester, while the inner layer is made of collagen (Parietex), cellulose (Proceed), expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE, dual-mesh) or polyglactin 910. Even though these materials were designed specifically to prevent adhesions, in actual practice they adhere to viscera on 18-57% of their surface [1216]. …”

“…Several studies have evaluated the use of intraperitoneal mesh [5][6][7][8][9] . Baroncelli et al 7 comparing the healing process between the Parietex ® and Surgisis ® meshes in the correction of abdominal wall defects in rabbits, observed that the Parietex ® and Surgisis ® were effective in correcting the defects.…”

“…Araújo et al 8 assessed the intraperitoneal use of polyester with collagen and polypropylene with polyglycolic acid meshes and had the same repair results in the abdominal wall defects of rabbits. Shulz et al 9 , compared absorbable polyester with collagen/elastine/polypropylene meshes to repair injuries to the abdominal wall of rabbits, and had no significant differences on its use.…”

“…The presence of metalloproteinases was approximately the same, expression of MMP-1, MMP-8 and MMP-13 were studied, with low difference in MMP-13 at 60 days. The expression of MMP-13 increased in the polyester mesh with absorbable layer prosthesis group 43 .…”
