A new method for the experimental induction of secundary biliary cirrhosis in wistar rats

Abstract: The aim of this study was to describe a method for the induction of experimental secondary biliary fibrosis (SBF). Forty-seven Wistar rats were submitted to hepatic duct obstruction (OB group) for thirty days without ligature, section or cannulization causing interruption of biliary flow. This technique was carried out by simple traction of the bile duct passing it through the xiphoid appendix. Nine rats were submitted to a sham operation for bile duct stricture and seven rats comprised the control group. Bloo… Show more

“…But, seven days after the procedure for biliary obstruction, the animals showed strongly yellow urine, skin and mucous membranes icteric, ranging from mild to severe; stools lighter shade than that observed before ligation, so as to hepatomegaly palpation. Signs compatibles with what is described on cholestasis in humans 1,48,49 , dogs 9,18 , mices 20 and rats 22,23 . However, in less time than that observed in other animal species researchs 20,22 .…”

The development of jaundice justifies the color changes of skin and mucous membranes observed, because bilirubin is deposited in tissues such as in high concentrations 49,50 .…”

“…Jaundice, when not accompanied by hypoproteinemia, does not increase the rate of dehiscence, probably because hepatic function is not significantly impaired before hypoproteinemia is established. Increased rates of abdominal wall dehiscence and incisional hernias have been found in jaundiced patients 20 .…”

“…Other authors have published studies evaluating the healing of peptic ulcers in patients with hepatic cirrhosis 20 , but there are few studies on hepatic cirrhosis and anastomosis healing [21][22][23] . Patients with cirrhosis may require colonic anastomosis, which causes concern on the part of the surgeon 22 .…”
