Objective: to investigate the factors associated with mortality in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting in a cardiovascular referral hospital in Santa Catarina. Method: quantitative, exploratory, descriptive and retrospective study. The medical records of 1447 patients, from 2005 to 2013, were analyzed for statistically related variables, these being: profile, hospitalization diagnosis, risk factors for coronary artery disease, complications recorded during the hospitalization, length of hospitalization and cause of death. Results: the mortality rate was 5.3% during the study period. Death was more common in females and those of black skin color, with a mean age of 65 years. Acute myocardial infarction was the most common hospitalization diagnosis. The majority of the complications recorded during hospitalization were characterized by changes in the cardiovascular system, with longer hospitalization periods being directly related to death from septic shock. Conclusion: the data provide subsidies for nursing work with preventive measures and early detection of complications associated with coronary artery bypass grafting. This reinforces the importance of using the data as quality indicators, aiming to guarantee care guided by reliable information to guide managers in planning patient care and high complexity health services.

Background: Machine learning (ML) has shown promising results in all fields of medicine, including preventive cardiology. Hypertensive patients are at higher risk of mortality after coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery; thus, we aimed to design and evaluate five ML models to predict 1-year mortality among hypertensive patients who underwent CABG.Hyothesis: ML algorithms can significantly improve mortality prediction after CABG.Methods: Tehran Heart Center's CABG data registry was used to extract several baseline and peri-procedural characteristics and mortality data. The best features were chosen using random forest (RF) feature selection algorithm. Five ML models were developed to predict 1-year mortality: logistic regression (LR), RF, artificial neural network (ANN), extreme gradient boosting (XGB), and naïve Bayes (NB). The area under the curve (AUC), sensitivity, and specificity were used to evaluate the models.Results: Among the 8,493 hypertensive patients who underwent CABG (mean age of 68.27 ± 9.27 years), 303 died in the first year. Eleven features were selected as the best predictors, among which total ventilation hours and ejection fraction were the leading ones. LR showed the best prediction ability with an AUC of 0.82, while the least AUC was for the NB model (0.79). Among the subgroups, the highest AUC for LR model was for two age range groups (50-59 and 80-89 years), overweight, diabetic, and smoker subgroups of hypertensive patients.Conclusions: All ML models had excellent performance in predicting 1-year mortality among CABG hypertension patients, while LR was the best regarding AUC. A pesquisa visa a conhecer a produção científica sobre procedimentos cirúrgicos em idosos longevos octogenários e analisar suas características gerais. Trata-se de pesquisa de revisão integrativa em banco de dados da Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde LILACS, Pubmed e SciELO, analisando-se 15 artigos publicados em português. O tratamento cirúrgico em octogenários tem-se mostrado viável. É necessária avaliação individualizada, não existindo critério universal para seleção ou rejeição de pacientes idosos, levando-se em conta as doenças pré-existentes.Palavras-chave: Idosos de 80 anos ou mais; Intervenção Cirúrgica; Gerontologia.
