Abstract: Objective: To compare the results obtained from two distinct surgical approaches in patients undergoing surgical correction of an atrial septal defect (ASD).Method: The study series consisted of 20 patients, with a mean age of 24.1 ± ± ± ± ± 14.2 years, distributed in two groups. In group A, 10 patients (80% female, with a mean age of 20.9 ± ± ± ± ± 12.0 years) underwent surgical correction of ASD through a complete sternotomy. “…The largest portion of the sample was subjected to a median sternotomy incision, once, according to Sampaio et al [12], that incision facilitates a broad access to the heart and great vessels. Lichtenberg et al [13] claim that the median sternotomy causes changes in mechanical ventilation by causing pain and instability in the thorax, however, in our findings, it was observed that only two patients subjected to that type of incision progressed with pulmonary complications.…”

“…The safety and feasibility of upper ministernotomy have been demonstrated [4,5], and despite increased surgical time, there is no increase in complications [6]. In our country, Rocha e Silva et al [5] demonstrated the safety of upper ministernotomy to surgically correct the IAC of 20 children and Sampaio et al [7] reported the aesthetic benefit without deleterious effects in adults also operated to correct the IAC.…”
