Piper aduncum found naturally in the Amazon and southeastern Brazil, is known for its secondary metabolites that have activity on insects. Anticarsia gemmatalis and Spodoptera frugiperda are among the major insect pests associated with agricultural production. This research evaluated the biological activity of hexane, ethyl acetate, and ethanol extracts of P. aduncum leaves on mortality and duration of larval and pupal periods, as well as weight, width, and length of A. gemmatalis and S. frugiperda pupae. The mortality of A. gemmatalis larvae in trials with P. aduncum extracts were 93.3% (hexane) and 90% (ethyl acetate), estimating LC 50 of 6.35 and 5.79 mg/mL, respectively. Mortality in S. frugiperda submitted to the hexane extract ranged from 3.33% to 96.66% (LC 50 of 8.22 mg/mL). The ethanol extract induced low mortality (3.33% to 23.33%). The P. aduncum extracts did not affect the development of S. frugiperda pupae. In A. gemmatalis differences in weight and length occurred. The chemical characterization was by GC-MS, which revealed that the major constituent in the hexane extract of P. aduncum was apiol (90.7%). P. aduncum extracts are important and promising components to manage A. gemmatalis and S. frugiperda, which cause extensive production losses.

RESUMO:O presente trabalho teve como objetivo investigar a composição química e avaliar a atividade inseticida do extrato acetônico das raízes de Piper alatabaccum sobre Hypothenemus hampei. As raízes foram coletadas no campus da Universidade Federal de Rondônia, em Porto Velho-RO. Diluições de 100,0, 50,0, 25,0, 5,0 e 0,5 mg mL -1 foram utilizadas para exposição na superfície contaminada e aplicação tópica. No teste de repelência, utilizou-se as diluições de 25,0 e 100,0 mg mL -1 . As avaliações ocorreram durante 48 horas após a exposição ao extrato. O extrato foi eficiente na mortalidade em aplicação tópica e superfície contaminada, não sendo eficiente no efeito de repelência. Estes resultados apontam para o elevado potencial inseticida do extrato de P. alatabaccum no controle de H. hampei. Identificou-se cinco compostos, sendo três amidas, dihydropiplartine piperovatina e piplartina, e duas flavona, 3 ',4',5,5',7 pentamethoxyflavone e 5,5',7-trimetóxi-3',4'-methylenedioxyflavone. ABSTRACT: Chemical constituents and insecticidal activity of the crude acetonic extract of Piper alatabaccum Trel & Yuncker (Piperaceae) on Hypothenemus hampei Ferrari.The purpose of this work was to investigate the chemical composition and to evaluate the insecticidal activity of the acetonic extract of Piper alatabaccum roots on Hypothenemus hampei. Roots of P. alatabaccum were collected at the University of Rondônia in Porto Velho-RO. Dilutions of 100.0, 50.0, 25.0, 5.0 and 0.5 mg mL -1 were used for exposition in the contaminated surface and for topical application. For the repellence test, 25.0 and 100.0 mg mL -1 dilutions were used. The evaluations occurred during 48 hours after exposure to the extract. The extract was efficient in terms of mortality, but no repellence was observed in the bioassays. These results pointed out the high insecticidal potential of the P. alatabaccum extract to control H. hampei. ABSTRAKTanaman dari genus Piper telah banyak dimanfaatkan baik sebagai obat tradisional maupun sebagai tanaman hias. Penelitian terdahulu menyebutkan bahwa Piper betle dan Piper acre memiliki potensi sebagai sumber antioksidan alami. Sayangnya belum banyak penelitian aktivitas antioksidan jenis Piper lainnya. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah menguji aktivitas antioksidan, dan kadar flavonoid total dari Piper nigrum, Piper aduncum, Piper retrofractum, dan Piper crocatum. Ekstraksi dilakukan secara maserasi bertingkat menggunakan pelarut n-heksana, etil asetat, dan etanol. Ekstrak yang diperoleh kemudian dipekatkan menggunakan rotary vaporator. Pengujian aktivitas antioksidan ekstrak dilakukan menggunakan metode peredaman radikal bebas DPPH (1,1difenil-2-pikrilhidrazil) secara spektrofotometri. Penetapan kadar flavonoid total dilakukan secara kolorimetri menggunakan alumunium klorida (AlCl 3 ). Hasil menunjukkan aktivitas antioksidan dari Piper nigrum yang diekstraksi menggunakan pelarut yang berbeda kepolaran ada pada rentang 57-859 μg/mL, Piper aduncum 129-1249 μg/mL, Piper retrofractum 180-789 μg/mL, dan Piper crocatum pada 259-791 μg/mL. Ekstrak yang memiliki aktivitas antioksidan yang paling kuat adalah ekstrak etanol Piper nigrum dengan nilai IC 50 sebesar 57,72 μg/mL. Hasil penetapan kadar flavonoid total tertinggi ditunjukkan oleh ekstrak etanol Piper aduncum dengan kadar 8,334 mg QE/100 mg ekstrak. ABSTRACTSome species from Piper genus were known for traditional medicine and ornamental plant. Previous studies showed that Piper betle and Piper acre had antioxidant activities. But, the study of antioxidant activity from other species of Piper was still limited. The purposes of this study were to determine the antioxidant activity, and total flavonoid content of Piper nigrum, Piper aduncum, Piper retrofractum, and Piper crocatum. Extraction was done by gradient maceration using n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and ethanol as solvents. The extracts were concentrated by rotary evaporator. Antioxidant activity was evaluated by DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) free scavenging method. Total flavonoid determination was done by colorimetry method using aluminum chloride (AlCl 3 ) as a reagent.
