Antioxidant activities of Juniperus foetidissima essential oils against several oxidative systems

Abstract: Abstract:The present study aimed to evaluate the antioxidant activity of essential oils obtained from branchlets of male and female trees as well as fruits of Juniperus foetidissima Willd., Cupressaceae, from Iran. For this purpose, essential oils of J. foetidissima were phytochemically analyzed and different concentrations of them were tested in five oxidative systems: 1) low-density lipoprotein oxidation; 2) linoleic acid peroxidation; 3) red blood cell hemolysis; 4) hemoglobin glycation; and 5) insulin glyc… Show more

“…we have revealed the presence of α-pinene, sabinene, myrcene, α-terpinene and γ-terpinene, α-terpinolene 4-methyl-1-(1-methylethyl)-3-cyclohexen-1-ol and α-cedrol as main constituents. This finding is somehow in contrast with previous reports revealing the presence (in large amounts) of limonene, β-pinene (Emami et al 2011) and α-thujone and β-thujone (Adams 1990). These compounds were not detected in our samples.…”

“…This is in accord with similar reports for juniper species from other regions (Elmastaş et al, 2006;Moein et al, 2010;Emami et al, 2011;Höferl et al, 2014;Cioanca et al, 2015;Elmhdwi et al, 2015). However, antioxidant activity as reported in this study did not correlate with the total content of phenolics and flavonoids, except for extracts obtained from cuttings of small seedlings, which shared the highest antioxidant activity with that of C2-type callus and in vitro shoots.…”

“…Thyme and its oil have also a long reputation in the Iranian folk [6][7][8] . Essential oils are regarded as important herbal products with biological and pharmacological activities [13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20] . Composition of an essential oil is influenced by a variety of factors related to geographical, climatic, cultivation and seasonal variations.…”
