Sesquiterpenes from the essential oil of Laurencia dendroidea (Ceramiales, Rhodophyta): isolation, biological activities and distribution among seaweeds

Abstract: Two known sesquiterpenes (1R*,2S*,3R*,5S*,8S*,9R*)-2,3,5,9-tetramethyltricyclo[6.3.0.0 1,5 ]undecan-2-ol and (1S*,2S*,3S*,5S*,8S*,9S*)-2,3,5,9-tetramethyltricyclo-[6.3.0.0 1,5 ]undecan-2-ol were isolated for the first time from the essential oil of the red seaweed Laurencia dendroidea collected in the Brazilian coast. These compounds were not active against eight bacteria strains and the yeast Candida albicans, but showed some antioxidant activity. Both compounds were also found in other seaweed species showin… Show more

“…Although the presence of sesquiterpenes was not expected in this group, triquinane alcohols (compounds 47 and 26) were found in P. perforata by using a high sensitivity extraction method (HS-SPME) (Gressler et al, 2011). These compounds were not active against bacterial strains or the yeast Candida albicans, but showed some antioxidant activity.…”

“…Aplysin (195) has shown a protective effect on hepatic injury induced by ethanol in rats [893]. The triquinanes 490 and 492 exhibited weak antioxidant activity when evaluated in the DPPH radical-scavenging assay [458]. The diterpenes parguerol (514) and isoparguerol (540) induced neurite outgrowth in rat pheochromocytoma (PC-12) cells at concentrations of 25 and 50 μM, respectively, while deoxyparguerol 7,16-acetate (651) was proven inactive even at a 100 μM concentration [478].…”

“…As previous reported by Gressler et al (2011), the sesquiterpenes 7-epi-silphiperfolan-6β-ol and silphiperfolan-7β-ol have the same retention time and the identifications were done by the comparison of the mass spectral overlap obtained with laboratory standards of both compounds and by the individual KI. Table 1 shows the composition of L. dendroidea in more details.…”

“…The antioxidant profile of both extracts by the two methods is shown in Figure 1. The antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of the essential oil of L. dendroidea have already been published (Gressler et al, 2011).…”
