Media discourse and the public sphere

Abstract: RESUMO: Neste artigo, tento pôr em relevo aspectos significativos da função do debate televisivo como esfera pública. Meu pressuposto é que o diálogo público, inclusive o da televisão, envolve fundamentalmente o estabelecimento de um horizonte de sentidos que delimita o que deve ser dito e conhecido, e que estabelece como verdadeiros determinados sentidos e conhecimentos em detrimento de outros. Hence, news media outlets have taken on the role of disseminating scientific knowledge to the public but also act as forums for debates on public issues through which both lay and specialized experts share views on various subjects, thus becoming “a minor device of government,” that is, “a mode of ruling through showing how we should think and act under certain norms of civility” (Chouliaraki, 2005: 49, original emphasis). Therefore , to understand public concerns and issues of governance, it is important both to assess news texts and op-eds, columns, and debate pieces, as well as the problematizations and voices that appear within these differing genres.…”
