Abstract. Levin-style classes which capture the shared syntax and semantics of verbs have proven useful for many Natural Language Processing (NLP) tasks and applications. However, lexical resources which provide information about such classes are only available for a handful of worlds languages. Because manual development of such resources is extremely time consuming and cannot reliably capture domain variation in classification, methods for automatic induction of verb classes from texts have gained popularity. However, to date such methods have been applied to English and a handful of other, mainly resource-rich languages. In this paper, we apply the methods to Brazilian Portuguese -a language for which no VerbNet or automatic class induction work exists yet. Since Levinstyle classification is said to have a strong cross-linguistic component, we use unsupervised clustering techniques similar to those developed for English without language-specific feature engineering. This yields interesting results which line up well with those obtained for other languages, demonstrating the crosslinguistic nature of this type of classification. However, we also discover and discuss issues which require specific consideration when aiming to optimise the performance of verb clustering for Brazilian Portuguese and other less-resourced languages.

Abstract:In the last decade, several lexical-semantic knowledge bases (LKBs) were developed for Portuguese, by different teams and following different approaches. Most of them are open and freely available for the community. Those LKBs are briefly analysed here, with a focus on size, structure, and overlapping contents. However, we go further and exploit all of the analysed LKBs in the creation of new LKBs, based on the redundant contents. Both original and redundancy-based LKBs are then compared, indirectly, based on the performance of automatic procedures that exploit them for solving four different semantic analysis tasks. In addition to conclusions on the performance of the original LKBs, results show that, instead of selecting a single LKB to use, it is generally worth combining the contents of all the open Portuguese LKBs, towards better results.

Towards the automatic enrichment of a thesaurus with information in dictionaries

Regarding that information in broad‐coverage knowledge bases, such as thesauri, is usually incomplete, merging information from different sources is an alternative to amplify coverage. We propose a method for the enrichment of a thesaurus with information acquired automatically from dictionaries. First, synonymy pairs are extracted. Then, these pairs are assigned to the most similar candidate synsets. Finally, the remaining pairs are the target of clustering to identify new synsets. After selecting the adequate experimentation settings, this method was applied to enrich a Portuguese thesaurus with synonyms extracted from three dictionaries, which resulted in TRIP, a larger and broader thesaurus with new words and concepts. The steps towards the creation of this new thesaurus and its evaluation are described here.
