Background: Biceps tenotomy and tenodesis are surgical treatments for pathology of the proximal tendon of the long head of the biceps. There is debate over which procedure provides better patient outcomes.Purpose: Compare patient-reported outcomes and satisfaction between biceps tenotomy and tenodesis. Methods: This retrospective cohort study including all patients undergoing arthroscopic biceps tenodesis or tenotomy as part of more extensive shoulder surgery with a single surgeon. Concomitant procedures included rotator cuff repair, subacromial decompression, acromioclavicular joint resection, and debridement. Patients 36-81 years old were contacted by phone at > 2-year post-operatively to complete a biceps-specific outcome questionnaire. Subject decision not to participate was the sole exclusion criterion. Satisfaction scores and frequencies of potential biceps-related downsides (biceps cramping/spasms, biceps pain, shoulder pain, weakness, cosmetic deformity) were analyzed for the effects of procedure, sex, and age.Results: Satisfaction score distributions were similar between patients with tenodesis and patients with tenotomy (χ 2 = 8.34, P = 0.08), although slightly more patients with tenodesis than patients with tenotomy reported being satisfied or very satisfied (96% versus 91%). Perceived downsides occurred more frequently among patients with tenotomy than in patients with tenodesis: 59% of patients with tenotomy reported ≥ 1 downside, versus 37% of patients with tenodesis (P < 0.01). In patients reporting ≥ 1 downside, distributions of total downsides differed between procedures (χ 2 = 10.04, P = 0.04): patients with tenotomy were more likely to report multiple concurrent downsides than were patients with tenodesis (31% versus 16%). Each individual downside tended to be reported as present by a greater proportion of patients with tenotomy than patients with tenodesis. Sex had no effect on satisfaction or downsides, but there was a trend for older patients to report higher satisfaction and fewer downsides.Conclusions: Biceps tenotomy and tenodesis are both viable treatments for proximal biceps tendon pathology, yielding high patient satisfaction. There were trends toward greater satisfaction and fewer problems in patients with tenodesis. Still, younger patients with tenodesis did report perceived downsides. Alternatively, older patients tended to be more satisfied with both procedures overall. Regardless of procedure, most patients receiving either tenotomy or tenodesis would undergo their respective surgery again. RESUMO Introdução:A força muscular (FM) é a capacidade do sistema músculo esquelético produzir tensão e torque. Essa é essencial em tarefas de vida diária e em atividades desportivas. A FM é utilizada para identificar indivíduos que possam estar em grupo de risco para lesões musculoesqueléticas, além de avaliar a aptidão física para desportos, o que torna sua mensuração de grande importância. Objetivo: Verificar os métodos utilizados para avaliação quantitativa da FM. Material e Métodos: Foi realizada uma pesquisa bibliográfica na base eletrônica de dados Scielo publicados entre 2007 e 2011. Os descritores utilizados para a busca foram "muscle strength" e "força muscular", foram incluídos artigos originais nos idiomas português ou inglês, que avaliassem a força muscular de membros inferiores (MMII) e superiores (MMSS) de forma quantitativa. No total, 37 artigos foram analisados. Resultados: Foi encontrada diversidade entre os estudos analisados na escolha do método de avaliação da FM. Foi verificado que o método mais utilizado para avaliação da FM foi o dinamômetro, seguido pelo teste de 1 repetição máxima (RM) e pelo teste de 10RM. Conclusão: Os métodos mais utilizados para avaliação quantitativa da FM foram o dinamômetro isocinético e teste de 1 RM, porém ainda não foi possível observar um método padrão para avaliação da FM. This is essential for daily living tasks and sporting activities. MS values are used to identify individuals at risk for musculoskeletal injuries and can also serve to evaluate physical fitness for sports practice, which makes it an important measure. Objective: To investigate the methods used for quantitative assessment of MS. Material and Methods: we performed bibliographic searches in the electronic database Scielo of articles published between 2007 and 2011. The descriptors "Muscle strength" and "força muscular" were used in the searches of originals articles in Portuguese and English investigating quantitative MS of lower and upper limbs. A total of 37 articles were analyzed. Results: Among the studies analyzed, there was a heterogeneity regarding the MS procedure. The most commonly used MS assessment method was the dynamometer, followed by the test of 1 maximum repetition (MR) and 10 MR tests. Conclusion: The mostly used methods for MS quantitative assessment was the dynamometer and 1 MR test. However, it was not possible to establish a standard method to assess MS. DESCRIPTORS

Objective: To determine whether there was any discrepancy in elbow flexion strength among patients with and without evident clinical deformity resulting from arthroscopic tenotomy on the long head of the biceps. Method: A group of 120 patients who underwent this procedure were evaluated. After applying the exclusion criteria, 89 patients remained in the analysis. Eighteen months after the operation (median), the elbow flexion strength was measured in newtons using a digital dynamometer. Three consecutive measurements were made and the average was used. The dominant and non-dominant sides were compared. Sex, age and mean elbow flexion strength in the operated and contralateral arms of patients with and without apparent clinical deformity were evaluated. The authors declare that there was no conflict of interest in conducting this work This article is available online in Portuguese and English at the websites: www.rbo.org.br and www.scielo.br/rbort patients with evident clinical deformity was 17.78 N for the dominant arm and 20.87 N for the non-dominant arm. The difference was 2.51 N. In the group without evident clinical deformity, the difference was 2.14 N. The median muscle strength in the operated arm was 17.26 N, while the median was 20.06 N in the non-operated arm, thus suggesting that there was a significant loss of muscle strength (p = 0.005). The difference in muscle strength loss between the patients with and without evident deformity was not considered statistically significant (p = 0.977). Conclusion: The patients who underwent arthroscopic tenotomy on the long head of the biceps with or without apparent clinical deformity from distal migration presented similar elbow flexion muscle strength.
