Show more

“…Trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole is not recommended due to high rates of resistance among S. pneumoniae (38.6 -39.8%) and H. influenzae (40.1% to 44.9%) in Brazil [Sader et al, 2001;Critchley et al, 2001].…”

“…It should be borne in mind that the worldwide multicenter antimicrobial surveillance program, known as SENTRY, and the Latin American Sistema Regional de Vacunas (Regional Vaccination System) II program have been a reference for guiding therapy in Brazil. (7,8) Despite advances in diagnostic techniques, it is estimated that, in approximately 50% of the cases, the etiology remains undefined, even in countries where access to etiological investigation is part of the protocols for the treatment of patients with pneumonia. (9,10) It is believed that Streptococcus pneumoniae is the major etiologic agent of bacterial pneumonia in various regions of the world.…”

“…An empiric regimen should take into account the important role of Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae, besides M. pneumoniae, C. pneumoniae and L. pneumophila in communityacquired bacterial pneumonias. It has recently been reported an increase of pneumococci strains moderately resistant to penicillin and more rarely some strains with a high level of resistance, a problem we now face in Brazil but in a smaller degree than in the United States, Asian and Latin American countries such as Mexico, Argentina, Chile e Uruguay [4][5][6]. In a similar way, there has been an increase in resistance of Haemophilus influenzae and Staphylococcus aureus to a number of antimicrobials [4].…”
