Abstract: Although prophylaxis has led to a decline in the frequency of P. carinii pneumonia among HIV-infected patients, the mortality associated with PCP ranges from 10% to 30%. We studied 11 patients infected by HIV without AIDS. Subjects underwent chest X-ray, blood gas sampling, pulse oximetry before and during exercise, and induced sputum examination for P. carinii.
