The systematic value of pollen morphology in trees and shrubs species of Bauhinia L. (Caesalpinioideae- subg. Bauhinia - sect. Pauletia) occurring in Brazil

Abstract: We analyzed the pollen grains of 30 taxa of the genus Bauhinia L., within five series: Aculeatae (9 species); Acuminatae (1 species); Cansenia (17 species); Pentandrae (2 species); and Perlebia (1 species). The pollen grains were acetolysed, after which they were photographed and analyzed under light microscopy. Non-acetolysed pollen grains were analyzed under scanning electronic microscopy. Characters such as shape, size, exine and aperture constitution were studied. The species were separated by a dichotomou… Show more

“…The means, standard deviations of the mean, and 95% confidence intervals were calculated. Ten similar measurements of pollen grains were obtained from additional material-from another collection (hereafter referred to as comparison material)-to verify the stability of the data obtained from the reference material (Aguiar et al 2008;Abreu et al 2012;Moreira et al 2013). Pollen grains (n = 10/species) were also measured in polar view (equatorial diameter in polar view and apocolpium side).…”

“…The palynological results obtained by Larsen (1975) and Perveen & Qaiser (1998) corroborate with that of the specimen analyzed here. However, the Brazilian species of Bauhinia described by Barth & Bouzada (1964), Salgado- Labouriau (1974), Carreira et al (1996), Moreira et al (2013), Buril et al (2010, Santos et al (2012) present exine gemmate, clavate, verrucate with microreticulate tectum, showing a difference among native and exotic species and that the genus is eurypalynous.…”

“…Ten (10) similar pollen grain measurements were obtained from additional material deposited in another collection (from this point on referred to as comparison material). Such measures were taken to check the stability of data collected from the reference material (Abreu et al 2012;2014;Moreira et al 2013).…”
