-(Pigmented Euglenophytes in a natural and shallow lake in the semiarid region of Paraíba State, Brazil). A floristic survey of the class Euglenophyceae in Panati Lake (7°11'14" S and 36°49'52" W) is presented. The samples were collected between November 2005 and April 2007 along the margins of the lake, and a total of 29 taxa were collected, described, and illustrated, comprising 11 specifics and 18 infraspecifics, with five typical and 13 non-typical varieties. The genus Trachelomonas showed the greatest richness (13 taxa), followed by the genus Lepocinclis (seven taxa). All of the 29 taxa cataloged had been previously reported for Brazil, most with wide geographical distributions, but all were new records for Paraíba State, and 25 new for northeastern Brazil -reflecting the need for more taxonomic studies of the Euglenophyceae in these locations.

Aiming at analyzing the water quality at Iracema Beach, in Fortaleza/CE, as well as characterizing the planktonic community, monthly collections were carried out between February and November 2019, with 100 liters of water being filtered, concentrated to 10 mL and preserved in 4% formalin. In the laboratory, via microscopy, the plankton species were identified and then classified based on references relevant to the subject, as well as consultations with specialists and electronic addresses. Furthermore, data on water temperature, transparency, salinity, dissolved oxygen and pH were obtained in situ. Bimonthly, one liter of water was collected for microbiological analysis, in the laboratory. The parameters analyzed showed good quality water, with 17 phytoplankton species being recorded, distributed among the Classes Cyanophyceae, Bacillariophyceae, Euglenophyceae, Chlorophyceae, Mediophyceae, Coscinodiscophyceae and Zygnematophyceae. For zooplankton, there were five species included in the Rotifera, Cladocera and Crustacea Classes. Phytoplanktonic species diversity was high, the zooplanktonic was low; very high equability and low species richness in both communities. No species was considered a bioindicator of eutrophication or pollution, and the microbiological analysis showed minimum values of thermotolerant coliforms, and the waters of Iracema Beach can be classified as class one saline, intended for recreation and with a very good quality.

Do phytoplankton and epiphyton communities differ between organic and conventional rice fields?

This study aimed to determine if there are any differences in the attributes and composition of the phytoplankton and epiphyton communities between organic (OF) and conventional (CF) rice fields. We also strove to identify if there were any variations in these communities by comparing samples taken from two different periods (12 and 35 days) after the application of the herbicide clomazone and penoxsulam in CF. The farms are located in the Pampa Biome, Southern Brazil. Phytoplankton samples from the subsurface water and epiphyton samples from the rice stems were analyzed using the Utermöhl method. The CF and OF had distinct environmental conditions (pH, conductivity, and turbidity values), and the residual concentration of the herbicides decreased over time. There were no significant differences in epiphyton and phytoplankton density, or in phytoplankton richness, between the rice fields; only the epiphyton richness and taxonomic composition showed differences between the rice fields. Cyanobacteria and Chlorophyceae comprised a large proportion of the epiphytic density in CF and OF, respectively. However, Bacillariophyceae and Chlorophyceae had greater phytoplankton densities in CF and OF, respectively. The taxonomic composition of communities should be considered an effective tool to show the differences between the two cultivation systems.
