Abstract: The health sciences are currently a cutting-edge scientific area in the world, due to their growing presence in various fields of knowledge, ranging from the so-called hard sciences to medicine, epidemiology, sociology, and political science. Not surprisingly, science databases experience difficulties in classifying the health sciences in broader categories of knowledge, like science or sociology.Brazil currently ranks 13 th in overall scientific output worldwide, according to the ISI-Thomson Reuters-Web of Sc… Show more

“…3 In Brazil the field of epidemiology has experienced significant growth in the last 20 years parallel to health sciences research strengthening (Meneghini, 2010). 2 This growth was largely a result of public policies for academic research improvement, especially through expanded graduate programs.…”

“…Reasons for this lack of creativity and use of automated ways of doing science can be partially attributed to the academic pressure to publish in order to be successful in the academic career, the phenomenon called "publish or perish" 15 . In Brazil, this situation was probably enhanced by the Capes post-graduation evaluation model, currently under review, which attributed greater importance to the quantity of products, to the detriment of their quality 23 . This may be one of the factors responsible for the fact that Brazilian production in Collective Health has little international visibility 23 .…”
