Objective: To estimate the prevalence of depressive symptoms and major depressive disorder, as assessed in population-based cross-sectional studies of Brazilian adults. Methods: We performed a systematic review of the literature. The major databases were searched up through October 2013. Two researchers selected the studies, extracted the data, and assessed their methodological quality. Meta-analyses were performed using random effects. Results: Of the 2,971 records retrieved, we selected 27 studies that assessed the prevalence of depression morbidity in 464,734 individuals (66% women). Eleven different screening tools were used to assess depression morbidity. The prevalence of depressive symptoms was 14% (95% confidence interval [95%CI] 13-16; I 2 = 99.5%), whereas the 1-year prevalence of major depressive disorder was 8% (95%CI 7-10; I 2 = 86.7%), and the lifetime prevalence of major depressive disorder was 17% (95%CI 14-19; I 2 = 91.6%). All rates were higher in women than in men. No causes of heterogeneity could be identified. Conclusion: Depression morbidity was common among Brazilian adults, and affects more women than men. Inconsistencies across studies highlight the need for standardization of future research. Clinicians should routinely investigate for the presence of depression morbidity in this population.

Resumo Objetivou-se avaliar o estado nutricional de crianças menores de 5 anos no Brasil no ano de 2009, o associando aos fatores sociais e demográficos. Utilizou-se dados da Pesquisa de Orçamento Familiar (POF 2008/2009), cujo perfil nutricional foi avaliado segundo os índices Peso-para-idade, Estatura-para-idade e Peso-para-estatura (n = 14.569). A associação foi estimada aplicando-se o teste de associação de Pearson, regressões logísticas e análises de correspondência. A análise de correspondência revelou maior associação da magreza com as crianças das regiões Norte e Nordeste, em famílias com menores níveis de renda e de cor/raça preta. O sobrepeso e a obesidade demonstraram maior relação com as crianças residentes nas regiões Sul, Sudeste e Centro-Oeste, do sexo masculino, da zona urbana, de cor/raça branca, com 3 anos de idade e de famílias com faixas de renda intermediárias. O sobrepeso e a obesidade demonstraram distribuição heterogênea quanto a sua espacialização dentre as Unidades da Federação. Aponta-se para uma polarização epidemiológica nutricional, sendo um grande desafio para a saúde coletiva reduzir as carências nutricionais e promover hábitos alimentares saudáveis desde a infância.

The objectives of this study are to identify the pattern of alcohol use among the elderly and to analyze its association with falls. A populationbased survey was conducted in a sample of Metropolitan São Paulo, Brazil, using IntroductionRecently, the number of people aged over 60 has markedly increased in many parts of the world, particularly in low-and middle-income countries 1 . In Brazil, it is estimated that by the year 2050 almost 20% of the population will be over 65 years of age 2 , with a significant impact on financing the national health system 3 .Although alcohol consumption is usually lower among the elderly when compared to younger subjects, its negative consequences can be higher, due to age-related physiological changes. The elderly have increased body fat and a reduction of the body non-fat mass and water, as well as a decrease in hepatic metabolism 4 . As a consequence, alcohol blood levels increase and the elderly start to undergo adverse consequences of alcohol ingestion even without increasing consumption 4 . Another important problem is related to the fact that a considerable proportion of the elderly population is under some form of medication with potential interactions with alcohol. Paskulin & Viana 5 studied elderly people in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil, and observed that only 23% of the sample did not use any medication. The differences between young adults and the elderly are so marked that it has been suggested that the latter should drink no more than only one drink per day, if there are no absolute contraindications due to the presence of some disease or use of medication 6 .
