This study evaluated the sociodemographic characteristics and behavior of the oral mucosa epithelium exposured to the herbicide glyphosate of family farmers in Cerro Largo, RS, Brazil. 120 individuals were selected for social data collection through interviews. According to the results, most of the interviewees uses glyphosate between 5-10 years, being exposed between 30 minutes to one hour each application and applying the herbicide 1-2 times a year. After the interview, we selected the subjects to the Micronucleus (MN) test. For this test, oral smears were performed in three distinct regions (cheek, mouth floor and tongue edges) of 10 test subjects (exposed to glyphosate, non-smoker and non-alcoholic) and 10 control subjects. Results showed that glyphosate exposure increased the frequency of MN in the test group (p = 0.0002), as well as the frequency of other cellular alterations, such as brokenegg (p = 0.001), binucleation (p = 0.0001) and karyolysis (p = 0.0004). Based on these findings, the extent use of glyphosate may be causing damage to the oral mucosa epithelium and this might respond adaptively through cellular modifications.

Due to the large consumption of soft drinks in Brazil and worldwide in recent years and considering that some of the components present in their composition pose potential risks to human health, the aim of this study was to evaluate the cytotoxic and mutagenic potential of specific cola and grape-flavored soft drink brands. Bone marrow cells of Wistar rats were initially treated by gavage with one single dose of Cola or Grape soft drink, which was next offered ad libitum (instead of water) for 24 hours. A negative control treatment was performed by administering one single dose of water and a positive control administering cyclophosphamide intraperitoneally. Statistical analysis showed that the Cola and Grape soft drinks studied were not cytotoxic. However, the Cola soft drink proved mutagenic in this experiment treatment time. Therefore, this study serves as a warning about the consumption of Cola-flavored soft drink and for the need for further subchronic and chronic studies on soft drinks in order to evaluate the long term mutagenic and cytotoxic effects of these substances.

“…A região de Passo Fundo no Planalto Médio do Rio Grande do Sul, por sua vez, caracteriza-se pela produção de grãos (trigo, soja), nas quais grandes quantidades de agrotóxicos (fungicidas, inseticidas e herbicidas) são utilizadas. A avaliação da atividade genotóxica em seres humanos, através da técnica de micronúcleos, revelou números significativamente mais elevados de micronúcleos em expostos do que em não expostos (Pacheco & Hackel, 2002). Já em um estudo transversal realizado em uma comunidade agrícola localizada em Nova Friburgo, RJ, os protocolos empregados (questionário ocupacional, coleta de amostras biológicas para exame toxicológico e avaliação clínica -geral e neurológica) apontam a ocorrência de episódios recorrentes de sobre-exposição múltipla, a elevadas concentrações de diversos produtos químicos, com grave prejuízo para as funções vitais desses trabalhadores.…”

Resumo O uso de mistura de agrotóxicos constitui prática relativamente comum na agricultura. A saúde humana pode ser afetada pelos agrotóxicos diretamente ou através do contato com produtos e/ou ambientes por estes contaminados-e, indiretamente, através da contaminação da biota de áreas próximas a plantações. A exposição concomitante a mais de um agrotóxico, como os herbicida sulfentrazona e atrazina ou os fungicida triazois e estrobilurinas; pode ocasionar toxicidade reprodutiva e/ou no desenvolvimento dos organismos expostos por possuírem potencial de interferirem no sistema endócrino como verificado experimentalmente. A exposição a vários agrotóxicos concomitantemente pode também afetar a saúde de trabalhadores rurais. Desta forma, é importante determinar as concentrações de misturas de agrotóxicos que causam efeitos prejudiciais em espécies não-alvo. Este quadro mostra a necessidade de realizar estudos experimentais relacionados à exposição conjunta de agrotóxicos e aprimorar a sua metodologia. Tais metodologias poderiam predizer as condições sob as quais as interações têm probabilidade de ocorrer. A compreensão do conceito de toxicidade de misturas e o desenvolvimento da capacidade para calcular quantitativamente a toxicidade das mesmas podem ser ferramentas úteis para se determinar as vantagens e desvantagens do uso de misturas. Há, portanto, necessidade de construir uma agricultura que considere os aspectos sociais, econômicos e ambientais.
