Prevalência de fluorose dentária em escolares de Marinópolis, São Paulo

Abstract: This study was conducted to establish the frequency of hemoglobinopathies among newborns undergoing screening tests for metabolic diseases at the University Hospital (Hospital de Clínicas) in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Testing for abnormal hemoglobins was performed by isoelectric focusing electrophoresis on agarose gel with blood obtained by heel stick and applied to filter paper. For confirmatory testing of abnormal neonatal screening, a venopuncture blood sample was obtained from the infant and… Show more

“…The overall frequency of HbS carriers in the sample was slightly lower than that observed in southern Brazil, a region that shares borders with Uruguay and where a carrier frequency of 1.2% has been reported for newborns (Daudt et al , 2002). In contrast, there was a greater difference between the frequency in the Uruguayan population in the present study and that in populations from northeastern Brazil, where there is a greater contribution from African populations and the frequency of HbS carriers ranges from 5.1% to 11.4% (Azevedo et al , 1980; Bandeira et al , 1999; Adorno et al , 2005).…”

“…Fluorosis was observed in cities with and without public water fluoridation supply, which is most likely the result of alternative mechanisms of fluoride ingestion during the tooth formation period. The most prevalent fluorosis levels in the present study were "very light" and "light", which corroborated previous reports (11)(12)(13). Fluorosis occurred in cities without water fluoridation, which suggest exposure to others sources of fluoride, such as dentifrices, mouth rinses, and polivitamins (12).…”

Fluorosis occurred in cities without water fluoridation, which suggest exposure to others sources of fluoride, such as dentifrices, mouth rinses, and polivitamins (12). A lack of knowledge regarding these alternative fluoride sources and the adverse effects of fluoride due to excessive ingestion were shown to be important factors in the occurrence of fluorosis.…”

“…Research conducted in the Gaza Strip, in the Palestinian Territories, showed that 61% of the collections occurred between the 11th and 17th day of life 18 . In Brazil, in Porto Alegre city, the average was 11 days; 19 in Sergipe State 17 days, with 50% of samples being collected in children older than 28 days; 20 in Campina Grande city, the average was 29.8 days, 21 and in Marília, São Paulo State, the average was 27 days 22 …”
