Alcohol consumption and gastric cancer in Mexico

Abstract: This paper presents an assessment of alcohol consumption, including the popular Mexican liquor tequila, in relation to the incidence of gastric cancer. We conducted a population-based case-control study in Mexico City (OR = 2,93; I.C. 95% 1,75), p<0,05. Essa associação persistiu tanto para os tumores de tipo intestinal (OR = 2,16; I.C. 95% 0,92, p de tendência 0,031), quanto para os de tipo difuso (OR = 4,48; I.C. 95% 1,94, p de tendência 0,018). O consumo de cerveja e bebidas destiladas (conhaque, rum, tequil… Show more

“…Fourteen studies examined the association of smoking and gastric cancer [24, 25, 3236, 40, 42, 49, 58, 59, 62, 66]. Study-specific ORs for ever smokers vs. never smokers ranged from 0.56 to 5.87 (Figure 2b).…”

“…Risk estimates for alcohol use were reported in 16 studies [24, 25, 32–35, 37, 40, 41, 49, 52, 56, 58, 59, 62, 66]. For six of these studies [24, 25, 58, 59, 62, 66], dose-specific ORs for ever drinkers were averaged since overall associations were not reported.…”

“…There are mixed findings about the relation between the type of alcoholic beverage and the incidence of gastric cancer. Wine drinking was significantly associated with a risk of developing gastric cancer in a study in Mexico, for the highest category of wine intake Odds ratio (OR) = 2.93 (CI 95%: 1.27–6.75) [34]. In Portugal, consumption of more than one bottle of red wine per day 20 years prior to the interview was also associated with a gastric cancer risk, OR = 2.61 (p = 0.049) [35].…”

“…Risk increases have been demonstrated with alcohol intake, specifically with hard liquor, beer (odds ratio [OR]=2.4; CI 95%, 1.5-3.9) [33], and wine (OR=2.93; CI 95%, 1.27-6.75) [34]. Alcohol intake has also been shown to increase the risk of chronic atrophic gastritis (3.2, 95% CI 1.1-9.2) [35].…”
