This work aims to focus on proposals that could stimulate the development of small scale integrated devices for the global challenge to provide electric energy from renewable alternative resources without major interventions. It presents an evaluation of a small-scale wave energy extraction system that can be installed in marine near shore structures, such as fishing piers. The system is characterized by a small oscillating-water-column (OWC) converter composed by tubes tied to the pillars of the structure. A mathematical model of the OWC device was developed. The model relies on two main components. The first uses linear wave theory to describe the water level variation inside the tube as a result of a wave passing by. The second considers the air flux converted to mechanical torque using Wells turbine equations. The simulations were carried out for different water depths and wave parameters, to evaluate the ratio between the input and output energy throughout the year. For the case study presented in this paper, the performance would be better as long as the device is placed in a position where the waves are less influenced by the bottom friction, but it still has the necessary increment of the wave height.

Gomes et al.: Wave energy off the Brazilan coast 220Evaluating the gravity wave energy potential off the Brazilian coast The wave energy potential on the Brazilian coast is estimated using in-situ buoy data and model data. The results present a greater potential on the southern-southeastern coast than on the northeastern coast, but the variance is also larger. These seem to be associated with the different atmospheric regimes. While in the northeastern portion the trade winds determine the wave regime, in the south the passage of cold front systems plays a major role. For almost all regions and throughout the year, the energy potential oscillates between 10 and 30 kW/m, the most efficient range to implement wave energy converters. The occurrence of sea states is also assessed, showing that the passage of cold front systems also creates different sea states in the S-SW area. Finally, the most common sea states and energy flux are estimated, showing a shift towards longer periods and higher waves for the latter. On the S-SW coast, although the most frequent sea states have waves with periods around 8 s, the energy flux has a more balanced distribution between these and the waves with periods around 11s, the common period for waves generated by cold front systems. This result shows that the most common sea state is not necessarily the one that should be considered when planning wave energy converters for the region. AbstrAct

Wave climate and power distribution around a rocky island: Alcatrazes, Brazil

We investigate the distribution of the wave power around the Alcatrazes island, a protected marine reserve in southeastern Brazil, located at 20 nautical miles from the coast of São Sebastião/SP. A 14-year wave time series (2005)(2006)(2007)(2008)(2009)(2010)(2011)(2012)(2013)(2014)(2015)(2016)(2017)(2018) extracted from the global WaveWatch III model, was used to obtain the offshore wave climate. Based on the wave climate, a wave propagation model (Delft3D) was applied in order to obtain nearshore information. The most frequent waves are from the east, southeast and south, with heights between 1.0 and 2.0 m and periods of 7 to 10 s. Due to dominant wave direction incidence, the wave power is higher at the more exposed eastern side of the island, with its lee side becoming shadowed from the main wave trains. Magnitudes vary seasonally, with winter and autumn presenting more energetic southerly waves and consequent higher wave power along the rocky island. The wave power distribution is a consequence of the incident wave characteristics and the geomorphology of the island. Our findings are the first assessment of the local wave climate and wave power distribution along the rocky shores of Alcatrazes island, providing important background information for understanding different aspects of its functioning and management.
