First observation of the diurnal and semidiurnal ocillation in the mesospheric winds over São João do Cariri-PB, Brazil

Abstract: ABSTRACT.The terrestrial atmosphere is a dynamical system in which periodic oscillations are present and play a significant role in the dynamics of the upper mesosphere and low thermosphere (MLT). It is already well known that atmospheric tides play an important role in the dynamics of the MLT region, and the purpose of this study is to extend our knowledge of diurnal and semidiurnal oscillations in the equatorial MLT, taking advantage of the measurements of meteor winds over São João do Cariri, Brazil (7 • S,… Show more

“…The wind patterns presented indicate a semi-diurnal tide oscillation. This type of intensification of the semi-diurnal tidal mode in the wind field has been reported by Lima et al (2007) and Buriti et al (2008). The zonal wind intensification was larger above 90 km, reaching values of −120 ms −1 (westward) at 97 km.…”

“…The amplitudes of the diurnal and semidiurnal tides were extracted by applying the harmonic analyses to a 2-day long moving window and stepped forward by 1 day. As the diurnal tide is dominant at Cariri latitude (e.g., Lima et al, 2007), only the amplitudes of the diurnal tide in the zonal (Fig. 7a) and meridional (Fig.…”

“…In this work, the zonal and meridional winds were estimated in seven height intervals of 4 km thickness, separated by 3 km, centered at 81,84,87,90,93,96 Because the atmospheric tides, primarily the diurnal tides Lima et al, 2007), are one of the remarkable features of the MLT winds over C. Paulista and Cariri, the data series were subjected to a low-pass filter in order to remove the variances associated with high frequencies. For this, a low-pass filter with a cutoff period of 1.5 days was used.…”
