Ground-based observation of solar UV radiation in Japan, Brazil and Chile

Abstract: Ground-based observations of solar ultraviolet (UV) radiations have been carried out in Tokyo, Japan, São Martinho da Serra, Brazil, and Punta Arenas, Chile. The initial results showed that the observations were concerned with the total amount of ozone. Variations in the flux ratio between UV-B and UV-A radiation in both hemispheres show a clear anti-correlation with the amount of ozone along line-of-sight. As a result of least-square fitting, exponential functions between the UV-ratio (UV-B/UV-A) and effectiv… Show more

“…The intensities of UVB (280-320 nm) received by the Petri dishes on the shelves were 0.19 (UVA+UVB: 0.27), 0.31 (0.45), 0.58 (1.0), and 1.55 (2.8) W m −2 , respectively (X1 1 Optomerter; Gigahertz-Optik Inc., Newburyport, MA). The highest solar UVB irradiances at ground level in Japanese main islands over seasons are around 2 W m −2 (Nozawa et al, 2007(Nozawa et al, , 2010. The UVB irradiances used in this study was thus within the ambient solar UVB radiation in Japan.…”

“…There was almost no difference between the control and −UV treatment plants (Table 1) at noon in summer (Nozawa et al, 2007), and we measured approximately 300 mW·m −2 at the plant level inside the plastic house in the afternoon at the beginning of the treatment in period I (data not shown). It seemed interesting that an additional 50 mW·m −2 UV-B irradiation in the nighttime caused obvious damage to perilla plants, although intense ambient UV-B radiation in the daytime did not.…”
