Mapeamento de recifes submersos na costa do Rio Grande do Norte, NE Brasil: Macau a Maracajau

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Studies on the Brazilian continental shelf were developed between Touros and Macau-RN (NE Brazil) with the aim to mapping carbonate buildups, and especially, reef ecosystems. Remote sensing, submarine movies, bathymetric survey and diving were the methods used. This paper will focus on three main aspects of the Rio Grande do Norte reefs: 1) characterization of the coral fauna; 2) the classification and 3) the distribution of the main northriograndense carbonate buildups.Reefs environments are found p… Show more

“…Other common vegetation consists of the seagrass Halodule wrightii and the algae Hypnea musciformis (Concentino et al., ). Reef systems occur in the inner shelf at depths between 20 and 30 m approximately 20 km from the coast and are aligned longitudinally NW–SE, which runs parallel with the shoreline (Leão, Kikuchi, & Testa, ; Santos, Vital, Amaro, & Kikuchi, ). The aspect of these reef systems is strikingly different because there are few or no coral species, and a higher abundance of rhodoliths associated with coralline algae and sponges (Santos et al., ).…”

“…Echinoderms, molluscs, bivalves, gastropods, polychaetes and cloroficeas algae are also found but corals are almost absent (Santos et al 2007;Vital et al 2008Vital et al , 2010. Samples taken from diving on the northern sector, adjacent to the Rio Grande do Norte state, revealed laminated sandstone cemented by carbonate, similar to beach rocks commonly exposed along the coast.…”
