Abstract: High-resolution seismic stratigraphic investigation of the Juparanã Lake, the largest lacustrine body in the lakes system of Doce River lower course (State of Espírito Santo, Southeastern Brazil), was performed, giving the information to discuss the Quaternary lacustrine evolution. Two seismic sequences were identified. The older seismic sequence is characterized by a reflection free pattern, associated with Holocene alluvial sedimentation. The younger seismic sequence is characterized by a parallel pattern of… Show more

“…However, a recent publication (i.e., Lima et al, 2014) showed that the morphology and sedimentary deposition of the São Francisco delta were controlled by N-S to NE-SW trending normal faults reactivated in the Quaternary, which might have also been the instance of many other areas of the Brazilian margin (see also Nogueira et al, 2010;Bezerra et al, 2014;Rossetti et al, 2011Rossetti et al, , 2013. Previous publications (e.g., Hatushika et al, 2007;Bricalli and Mello, 2013) have also suggested that the evolution of the Doce River delta was controlled by tectonic activity contemporaneous to sediment deposition. However, as shown in the present work, sea-level change constituted an important element in determining facies distribution in the Doce River delta.…”

“…Research regarding the evolution of coastal Quaternary deposits has been limited to a few studies (Martin et al 1996; Bastos et al 2010; Machado et al 2016). Exceptions are the studies along the north coast of the state, around the mouth of the Doce River (Suguio and Martin 1981; Dominguez et al 1983, 1981; Martin et al 1996, 1993; Hatushika et al 2007; Cohen et al 2014; France et al 2015; Rossetti et al 2015). Palynological surveys were previously limited to estuarine systems located in the northern region of ES state (Buso et al 2013a, 2013b; Freitas et al 2016).…”
