Sedimentological analysis of the Missão Velha Formation (Araripe Basin, northeast Brazil) is the aim of this paper through detailed facies analysis, architectural elements, depositional systems and paleocurrent data. The main facies recognized were: (i) coarse-grained conglomeratic sandstones, locally pebbly conglomerates, with abundant silicified fossil trunks and several large-to-medium trough cross-stratifications and predominantly lenticular geometry; (ii) lenticular coarse-to-medium sandstones with some granules, abundant silicified fossil wood, and large-to-medium trough cross-stratifications, cut-and fill features and mud drapes on the foresets of cross-strata, (iii) poorly sorted medium-grained sandstones with sparse pebbles and with horizontal stratification, (iv) fine to very fine silty sandstones, laminated, interlayered with (v) decimetric muddy layers with horizontal lamination and climbing-ripple cross-lamination. Nine architectural elements were recognized: CH: Channels, GB: Gravel bars and bed forms, SB: Sand bars and bedforms, SB (p): sand bedform with planar cross-stratification, OF: Overbank flow, DA: Downstream-accretion macroforms, LS: Laminated sandsheet, LA: Lateralaccretion macroforms and FF: Floodplain fines. The lithofacies types and facies associations were interpreted as having been generated by alluvial systems characterized by (i) high energy perennial braided river systems and (ii) ephemeral river systems. Aeolian sand dunes and sand sheets generated by the reworking of braided alluvial deposits can also occur. The paleocurrent measurements show a main dispersion pattern to S, SE and SW, and another to NE/E. These features imply a paleodrainage flowing into the basins of the Recôncavo-Tucano-Jatobá.

ResumoUma nova localidade fossilífera, Sítio Baixa Grande, é descrita para a Formação Romualdo, Cretáceo Inferior do Nordeste do Brasil. Localizada próxima da área urbana da cidade de Potengi, na porção oeste da Bacia do Araripe, esse sítio foi descoberto em 2010 e apresenta diversidade e grande quantidade de fósseis. As concreções, de coloração bege a avermelhada, com formas regular e irregular, são facilmente encontradas sobre o solo. Apresentam forma ovoide, com textura pouco laminada. Os macrofósseis estão localizados na porção mediana da concreção, podendo apresentar também tridimensionalidade, uma feição comum aos fósseis da Formação Romualdo. Dentre os fósseis coletados estão tetrápodes, representados por ossos isolados de pterossauros e restos de tartarugas. Os peixes encontrados incluem: Vinctifer comptoni, Cladocyclus gardineri, Tharrhias araripis, Calamopleurus cilindricus e Neoproscinetes penalvai. Os fósseis aqui apresentados compreendem os únicos com localidade de coleta entre os encontrados na região oeste da Bacia do Araripe, uma área onde os afloramentos fossilíferos do Grupo Santana foram considerados como inexistentes. Landforms and Landscape Evolution of the Equatorial Margin of Northeast Brazil

The study area is part of the Brazilian Equatorial continental margin, formed after the Equatorial Atlantic opening in Aptian times. Onshore, a Precambrian basement-the Borborema structural province-is subdivided into several geological domains by a wide system of Late Proterozoic shear zones partly reactivated in the Cretaceous. The present structural pattern is organized around a discontinuous NE-SW set of basins and half grabens-the intracratonic CaririPotiguar rift zone. Representing failed rift structures of Early Cretaceous age with remnants of their post-rift sedimentary cover, it is intersected by the transform margin in the Potiguar Basin area. Remains of the pre-rift cover of the basement are preserved outside these structures (the Parnaiba Basin, to the west) and inside the rift zone in southern Ceará (Araripe Basin). Along the coast, a thin dissected layer of Cenozoic continental sediments (the Barreiras Group) underlies the low-lying "tabuleiros" between the marginal escarpment and the shallow continental shelf.
