The sexing of species is an important tool for population management. In tortoises and turtles, sexing is usually done according to secondary characteristics, such as plastron morphology or phallus eversion techniques. In this paper, we present the phallus eversion method and compare its efficiency to other existing techniques. This new method aims at shortening the management time and reducing the physical aftereffects on the animals, fostering the clinical and reproductive management of Geoffroy’s side-necked turtle (Phrynops geoffroanus) and related species. A sample of fifty individuals was taken in the central region of Piauí state, Northeastern Brazil. The proposed method consisted of moving the head from its resting position. The methods achieving a success rate higher than 80% were compared to each other as for the stimulation time required for phallus eversion. The method as here proposed achieved 100% efficiency in the sex determination of specimens with a linear carapace length between 10 and 34 cm. Also, when compared to the second most efficient method, it substantially reduced the time needed for managing the specimens (91%), avoiding possible sequelae in the individuals handled.

No Brasil, 31 espécies de quelônios são registradas, entretanto duas espécies se destacam, sendo o Jabuti-piranga (Chelonoidis carbonaria) e o Jabuti-tinga (Chelonoidis denticulata). Apesar de ser um animal silvestre, a criação de jabutis e o convívio destes com humanos têm aumentado, da mesma maneira, a prática de consumo deste animal e seus ovos é descrita em relatos históricos e culturais. Uma vasta diversidade de parasitas pode ser encontrada em répteis silvestres e de estimação, dentre esses, parasitas pertencentes aos nematódeos, cestódeos, trematódeos e protozoários. Baseado em análises coproparasitológicas exploratórias realizadas pelo Laboratório de Patologia e Parasitologia Veterinária da Universidade Federal de Jataí, objetivou-se relatar casos de parasitismos por nematóide Sauricola spp. em Chelonoidis carbonaria advindos do Parque ecológico Diacuy localizado no município de Jataí, Goiás, Brasil. Foram coletadas amostras fecais de exemplares da espécie Chelonoidis carbonaria, com o propósito de investigação qualitativa de parasitas, processadas por técnica de flutuação e analisadas em lâminas temporárias em microscópio óptico. Foram encontrados ovos elipsóides de estrongilídeos, com casca fina e com tamanho aproximado de 100 μm, que foram identificados como ovos de Sauricola spp. Contudo, diante da carência de informações e relatos sobre o gênero Sauricola acredita-se ser o primeiro relato em Goiás,

Resumo -O conhecimento da história natural das espécies brasileiras de cágados e tartarugas ainda é bastante incipiente, visto que a maior parte das informações sobre esses animais se restringe aos poucos registros de ocorrência, que em geral encontram-se esparsos na literatura ou mesmo em museus. Essa escassez de conhecimento dificulta abordagens mais amplas sobre vários aspectos ecológicos e evolutivos primordiais em planos de conservação e manejo para esse grupo. A grande extensão geográfica, complexidade ambiental e degradação dos biomas no Nordeste fazem com que a sistematização dos dados ambientais e biológicos sobre os quelônios da Região, compilados e discutidos neste trabalho, sejam de suma importância para a caracterização do estado de conservação dessas espécies e, por consequência, auxiliem a subsidiar o diagnóstico dos ambientes associados. The paucity of knowledge hinders broader approaches on various ecological and evolutionary aspects, which are primordial for conservation planning and management of the group. The large geographical extent, the environmental complexity, and the degradation of biomes in Northeast Brazil make the systematization of environmental and biological data on turtles from this region, which are compiled and discussed in this paper, highly important to contribute to the characterization of the conservation status of these species and therefore to subsidize the diagnosis of the environments associated to them.
